Though consistently billed as a pop band, their music trips the wire into a frenzied sonic adventure when taken into concert. Songs that are quirky, poppy exercises in the studio like "Delilah", "Mystify Me" and "In Your Head", become hard-hitting rock songs with a political edge when played live. The diversity of The Cranberries music and Delores O'Riordan's voice becomes fully expanded when played out. Much has been written about Delores' voice -- an amazing gift, but it's so powerful and resonant and pure that the electronic medium cannot capture all its nuances. Much of its vibrancy, reach and color gets lost in the studio. Fortunately, most of it gets recovered on stage. When heard in concert, her voice takes on a depth, broadcasts its warmth and covers a vocal range of a few octaves at least. The Cranberries had all points covered that night in Manhattan's Hammerstein Ballroom. They went from whirling the crowd into sing-along delirium during "Let It Linger", to Delores sitting alone on a stool singing "Saving Grace", a new tune from the latest album, Bury The Hatchet. Through it all, they kept in touch with their enthusiastic audience as Delores introduced most of the songs and told anecdotes about them in between. In short, The Cranberries are a good, hard-rocking band that puts on a great show. They take the ingredients in place on their albums: complex ear-catching arrangements, tight playing and Delores' incredible voice -- and whip them together into an electronic delight. - -- Elizabeth Gariti - --------------------------------------------------------------- This is the Ridiculous Thoughts Mailing List Send posts to : cranlist@smoe.org Send unsubscribe requests to: cranlist-request@smoe.org Put "unsubscribe" in the BODY of the message. First of all, I have one apology to make...to Noel Hogan. I'll explain later in this review. Well, me and my uncle left for the concert at 1:30pm and we got there at 3:00pm. A few people, but not many were waiting. We finally got in about 6:30pm. I got my camera in. YES, pics for all. I ran to the front and got a spot against the fence about 10 degress off center. I DIDN'T MOVE FROM THAT SPOT FOR 5 HOURS!!!!!!! Anyway, I didn't know for sure, but sure enough Sponge was playing. SPONGE ROCKED!!!!! They played Wax Ecstatic, Plowed, and Molly, along with a coupla new ones from their new CD. I got a few good pics, one great one, then. (Security was semi-lax) anyway...they came on on time and played a 40 minute set. Then the roadies set up the set for the 'berries. One thing about being so close that is bad is the fact that I got to see the set list. I wanted to be surprised but that was cool anyway. I memorized it. While I was memorizing the list, two of the security guys walked towards me. The cool one says, "Come on, just let it go." He came and sat in front of me and we talked about how he likes his job and shit. Then he comes close and whispers "I know you got the camera. Don't worry about it, just get your shots off when I'm yelling at other people, 'cause the promoters are watching us." I'm like "COOL." So the lights dim and the berries come on (Dolores last in a black shirt, nylon pants and a silver jacket) and they went through PROMISES, ANIMAL INSTINCT, and LOUD & CLEAR. I was lovin' every minute. And the crowd was pushing forward, but well behaved for the most part. Then she took off her jacket and did ODE TO MY FAMILY. Rock! Then they lapsed into the first album with SUNDAY, LINGER, and WANTED. cool. Then my favorite song, SALVATION (they skipped STILL CAN'T which was on the official website's set list - Latest News April 16th). The crowd jumping and down...it rocked. Then more from the new album, SAVING GRACE and YOU & ME. I'm getting some cool pics too. Then DAFFODIL LAMENT came on. And it happened...I MADE PHYSICAL CONTACT W/ DOLORES!!!!!! I'll never wash my left hand again (ewww!!) Anyway, I CAN'T BE WITH YOU, then WALTZING, RIDICULOUS THOUGHTS, and DELILAH, and the band's final song of the night ZOMBIE. (Any berries concert knows they do an encore where she changes clothes) Zombie rocked. Then the encore came...Dolores came out in this beautiful pink dress. PRETTY was cool...then came SHATTERED. Noel on the left, Dolores in the center, and Mike on the right (BTW, you guys were right about the backup singer guy...he was a little fruity.) Anyway, the security guy stepped away for me to get a shot. I held out my camera in plain view and got a shot of Dolores. NOEL LOOKS RIGHT AT ME...All I can do is shrug and mouth the word, "Sorry." Then he laughed and continued on. ROCK!!!! Then they did WHEN YOU'RE GONE (which I wasn't expected again 'cause of the official set list) from my favorite berries record TTFD. Then DESPERATE ANDY and DREAMS. Man that rocked...At the end of the show...They threw out the set lists, Fergal's extra sticks, and the sweat towels...oh and Dolores wiped her forehead during the concert and threw out her towel. Anyway, I got some good pics from the concert and hope to have them up as soon as possible at my website: http://listen.to/purecranberries. cranatic oh...and zombieguide guy...you can swipe this for your concert review if you would like...put the by-line as cranatic99, thanks.
