To me, the Cranberries are the ideal band in every way!! They are, which is still strange to me. There are several other bands I like, but they are all missing at least one criteria that I would like a really good band to have, and the Berries have them all. When the Cranberries play Boston, it's almost like a welcome-home concert. The Irish group always gets treated royally - and Monday night was no exception. The Cranberries are back after a MusicReview four-year absence, so the reading on the applause meter was higher than usual at Monday night's energizing, sold-out show at the Orpheum. Much has happened since the Cranberries were last in town - singer Dolores O'Riordan had a baby, two other band members got married, and they all had to grapple with the aftershock of fame - but the band has returned with renewed confidence and purpose. That's especially true for O'Riordan, who was sensational as she sang and spun around charismatically for the first crowd in Orpheum history to buy its tickets only over the Internet. O'Riordan seemed reborn compared with her last performance at Great Woods four years ago. At that time, she was stressed out, had lost weight and developed a drinking problem she talks about openly today. She was manic onstage, and the show suffered for it. But Monday night, she was in complete control - relaxed when she had to be (witness beautiful versions of new songs ''Saving Grace'' and ''You & Me,'' both about her son, Taylor) and also hard-edged when need be, as on the still-powerful antiwar song ''Zombie'' and new rockers ''Desperate Andy'' (about a man clinging to a neurotic romance) and the hormone-charged ''Animal Instinct.'' O'Riordan looked healthy and fit, having put on some weight and quieting talk of the anorexia that was said to be plaguing her last time around. She skipped around stage happily, waltzing and shimmying loosely, no doubt helped by the massage she had backstage before the show. She was clearly having fun. She also sported a tattoo on her arm with a rose and her husband's name, Don, through the middle. True love. She accented the more upbeat side of the band's repertoire (including 8 of 13 songs from the new album, ''Bury the Hatchet'') and added a playfully theatrical tone later when she changed from an all-leather look to a pink, floral-print dress and an ornate, floor-length cape that made her look like Little Red Riding Hood on acid. The band followed her lead and played with a warm chemistry, especially brothers Noel and Mike Hogan on guitar and bass, respectively. Noel also broke a couple of strings with his ferociously animated strumming. While the band's punky edges have been streamlined, they're still there on occasion. The entire sound, however, has been expanded appreciably. And if you missed them Monday night, look for them at the Tweeter Center later this summer. Opening act Jude was well received with his modern folk-hero style, offering witty street tunes with a cerebral edge. And a final note about the Internet-only sale: ''We're happy with it. It keeps people from waiting in the cold for tickets,'' Noel Hogan said afterward. This story ran on page F01 of the Boston Globe on 05/05/99. © Copyright 1999 Globe Newspaper Company. It did, and it's listed there for $21.90. Weird. I don't think the issue was new -- it was in a section called "Hooray of Hollywood!" and had quotes from different celebs. Anyway, it had the crans listed, with a pic of the band (looked TTFD era) with a quote. It didn't say from who, but I suspected Dolores. Anyway, it was about abortion and how it cuts down mothers' self-esteem. Anyone else ever see this? -Alex - -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Alex Kraus a.k.a.
