[cen23173 Subject: %Cran: What are the cranberries? I've decided to share something with you people. This is an opinion I've formed from wondering why critics are always so hard on the cranberries: Critics (being the unprofessional idiots that they are) have always tried to label the cranberries. These are some of the genres I've heard them being placed in: pop, alternative, Irish Rock, contemporary, post-modern, mellow... The list goes on and on but my point is that The Cranberries fit in any of these categories and when their music goes in a different direction, the critics go spastic. For example: when critics first heard Zombie they thought "Oh No!! I've already labeled them as pop because of Linger! Well it's obviously their fault that they used a different style so this one gets a bad revue." The critics can't seem to tolerate variety; it seems to screw up their minds or something. Another aspect that really makes me mad is the fact that when the critics label the cranberries, they seem to judge them by ridiculous standards. Another example: Critics assume that the Cranberries are a rock band, but since Noel doesn't play guitar like Jimi Hendrix and Dolores doesn't sing like Courtney Love (eww that's a scary thought) they must be a pretty pathetic "rock" band. So in conclusion, the cranberries are NOT the type of band that can be classified or categorized. I mean look at the music that has influenced them: The Smiths, The Beatles, Elvis, Patsy Cline, Duran Duran, Sinead O'Conner, Irish traditional music, and music from the Catholic Church. What do these artists/styles have in common? virtually nothing So how can anyone expect the cranberries to play one type of music? First of all, people shouldn't listen to music because someone says it belongs to a particular style, better than this one should listen to everything that gives him something special for living or something to think about. I mean, the radio or MTV are much more a media for the mainstream to sell their products and because of that they want to have everything under 'catalogue'. True artists don't fear about that, they just do what they do best: create!! So, what can a critic (so called specialist) say about something that is original and new for him?... They invented the 'alternative' name, they just use this word again and again because they just don't get it! I have only to groups of music: A. The one I like B. The one I don't So I don't care what they say about the cranberries they are just at group A. :-) ================================================== Un E-Mail de: Matias G.
