Today I tell all. Late in Xena's run, I flew into Memphis for a regional Xena convention. At the airport, I called the convention hotel and asked for a ride. Soon after, a limousine from the hotel pulled up in the airport parking lot. I got in and the driver agreed to take me. He waited a few minutes until three women got in. One was merely attractive. She got in front with the driver. The other two were spectacular. As they got in, one said "Hi" to me. She was Hudson Leick. I said "Hi." The woman in front was a representative of Creation, the company which ran Xena merchandise and conventions. She spoke to the driver, probably about me. Hudson asked me if I was going to "present" something at the con. I said no. She may have wondered if I was a writer or director she had never met. The Creation rep said I was simply going to the hotel. Hudson said "Oh" with an edge in her voice, as if she were thinking, "What's he doing in my van? He could have been a fan." Since I was quite sure she did not want to meet a fan in an unplanned way, I said nothing. The Creation rep said they would let me out at the front of the hotel then go around to the back and take Hudson and her friend up the freight elevator to their room. The three women talked about the nightclub they would visit that evening. The next day when Hudson appeared on stage I was one of the few people who gave her a standing ovation, while everyone else gave a sitting ovation. Her eyes swept the crowd but if she recognized me she gave no sign. That is a true story. The other anecdotes are from the big Burbank convention during Xena's last season. Many of you may already know about these two stories. First, in the dealers' area, next to a big table of Xena material, which was surrounded by buyers, was an almost as big a table of Trekkie stuff, manned by two Trekkie dealers. There were hundreds of people buying at Xena tables and nobody was at the Trek table. The two guys looked shell-shocked. Second, the con attendees were about four-fifths women. The facility had equal restroom facilities for men and women. Once I went to the restroom area and found several men waiting outside the men's room. A woman was standing guard. Due to the crowding in the women's room, a group of women had taken over the men's room and posted a guard, like a bunch of Amazons. Finally I have a theory about a post from many years ago, when the series was on TV. The poster said her cat always got up and left the living room when the TV was turned on, except for Xena. She swore that the cat would come into the living room when she heard the Xena music, watch Xena with unblinking attention, then walk out when the end music came on. I think I've figured it out. The cat had identified Gabrielle as a particularly juicy little mouse and wanted to be there to get her if she ever jumped off the screen.
