They're not poisonous but I've read they can give you a sharp nip with those big jaws. I was helping a surveyor in the bush decades ago when I cut a branch off a ti tree and a weta - say a bit over an inch long - popped up on the cut end a foot from my face. The surveyor heard my scream of surprise and alarm, he told me he guessed exactly what had happened.
