But then I always preferred the dramatic eps. Even in comedy, I like dark. Just my personal preference. The cliff off which the priests were about to dump their sacrifice was the same location (or close to it) as the Gablaunch site from Bitter Suite. Also the scene of the funeral pyre in Rebel With a Cause (Herc ep). The sacrifice Genia turns out to be quite ungrateful for being rescued, and yet another irritating blonde - though only a pale shadow of the spectacularly ungrateful and malevolently sacrificial Seraphin. Unfortunately, much of the episode revolves around convincing this blonde that gods aren't worth dying for, by demonstrating how shallow and useless Aphrodite is. Now I like Aphrodite, who steadily acquired a more thoughtful personality as the series progressed, notably so in Motherhood, so this doesn't appeal to me. And, frankly, if Genia is so dumb as to want to be thrown off a cliff, then as far as I'm concerned, let her. There must be far better things for Xena to do with the four hours' screentime she's got left. The villain is the totally over-the-top Hori Ahipene, who also played the similar, but more stupid and funnier Brutus in Love on the Rocks. (No not the Brutus we know). As a villain he's more laughable than scary, but hardly out of place in this episode. The waterfall - I looked for it for ages. It's the same fall as in Kindred Spirits, also as it turns out, in Render Unto Caesar. For a while I favoured Karekare Falls, but the pool there is not as large as the one in this fall. (Karekare was used in a fishing scene in the early Herc Siege at Naxos). This fall turns out to be Okiritoto Falls, on the Okiritoto Stream at Muriwai, and a couple of miles upstream of the Cable Road area where so many pine-forest scenes were shot. I've still never seen the falls for myself, since they're on private farmland, but a waterfall enthusiast very kindly sent me a photo of them. Also, the riverside walking-with-Argo sequences in Punch Lines were immediately upstream of this fall. One thing from the interviews that may have puzzled people - Renee says that Katie (Stuart - Genia) is 'a little bit like the Deianeira character from Hercules'. This seems weird - Genia is utterly unlike Deianeira, Herc's dead wife (Tawny Kitaen - seen on XWP in God Fearing Child, for example). The answer is simple - way back in the second Herc TV movie, Lost Kingdom, Renee played an irritating blonde ungrateful wannabe gravitational sacrifice who Herc saved, named - Deianeira! This is obviously Renee's reference. In the very next TV movie, Tawny Kitaen / Deianeira popped up, a totally different character, and no reference or explanation was ever offered in Herc for the name being repeated. (My theory is that one screenplay evolved into two and nobody thought to change the name of the female lead). This has much of the feel of a Season 2 ep. I didn't hate it but I felt far more dramatic things should be happening to Xena as the end of the series approached. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I have tried twice over the last month or so to contact the owner/moderator of this list, meth@smoe.org, in order to get my email addy changed. I have not seen a reply to either my old or new email addy. I'm uncertain if my messages have not reached their INBOX, or if they have, and their replies are not reaching either of my INBOXes. My Chakram-Refugees email is still being routed to my old addy, so I am assuming it is the former. If I could receive help in getting my email addy switched over to my new addy, I'd greatly appreciate it.
