At first, I thought, "Yay!" so I eagerly watched it, waiting to see Lucy again. And then, after watching that episode, I thought, "Is there any way to unsee this?" Man, talk about disappointed. The slow-motion gore, the gratuitous sex... And then a friend of mine was talking about how he saw a later episode with Lucy Lawless topless... Y'know, "XENA" was a homerun, in my book, and her "Locusts" and "Vampire Bats" were base hits, but as far as I'm concerned "Spartacus" is a total strikeout. I'd rather stick with the original movie with Kirk Douglas. Man, what a disappointment. And they do it well, too. They included all the classics from horror movies, the one I found creepiest was the maggots getting under Gabrielle's skin. And the black blood dripping upwards off the floor had a high 'yuk' factor too. Oh, and I thought Gabby looked kinda attractive with the wild hair and yellow eyes. (Is that weird or what?) It was rather tragic seeing Cyrene get witch-hunted by the townspeople. Especially after they'd so willingly and valiantly supported Xena against Athena in Amphipolis Under Siege. But then, Xena's family weren't very lucky, on the whole. And Gabs' family were mostly objectionable. (And Herc's family, well, we know what happened to them. Both his mortal family and most of his immortal rellies. Altogether, Renpics weren't big on family values :) The sequel, Heart of Darkness, had some fun moments (though the 'X-ray vision showing people's hearts going rapidly black' was incredibly cheesy). It wasn't just the people of Amphipolis who were turning dark, though - Michael, who was previously a benevolent, if arrogant, figure of authority, has turned into an unscrupulous and scheming tyrant who doesn't hesitate to sacrifice Xena and the angel Lucifer to further his cause. I liked it that he is now a villain. Of course, it could be said that he was always like that, just that while his interests and Xena's coincided, his villainy was not apparent. Moments I liked - Eve getting bopped by Gabrielle with one of her own fish statuettes - 'No-one likes a party pooper'. But then I also liked the scene in the temple where Eve has a Livia moment and hurls Virgil and Gabrielle across the room. And of course I really did like it when Xena corrupted the archangel Lucifer. (I must have a wicked and depraved soul, I think. Or maybe just iconoclastic :) cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
