I've always liked this episode. Even though I hated the Season 4 eps where Xena's fighting ability was impaired, in this ep she had no fighting ability (until the end) and I was fine with that. Maybe because Amarice and Gabrielle (with her suddenly-found ability) took up the slack. In fact, all the cast, even Joxer and Eli, had useful roles to play, and good lines. And Ares is always good value, his fights with Kal were fun to watch - and it must be mentioned, Ares rescued Xena from Kal early in the episode. Although Xena had lost much of her past, it didn't impair her comprehension of 'current' events, her grasp of developments was as quick as ever - which I liked. And her joyful backflip over the altar to land with the new chakram pointing at Ares' throat, that was an excellent way to announce that Xena was back. Talk of the chakram reminds me, I personally liked the 'old' chakram, I thought it had a classic beauty that the 'S' chakram lacked. Succession was another episode that I found, if not in Chakram's class, at least moderately enjoyable, against (apparently) the general fan opinion. I must say my (usually low) regard for Gabrielle jumped markedly when she intercepted one of Mavican's throwing knives with her sai. This must count as the episode with the equal-smallest cast - just four characters (equal with Paradise Found). Days and nights seemed to pass very quickly in the 'other' world. I suppose it's just the storytellers' way of leaving out the boring bits. And I much liked the denouement (is that the right word?) where Xena manouvred Mavican into calling on Ares for help - "I'm asking for your help, God of War" (and Xena adds, ever so helpfully, 'she's asking for your help'). Something makes me think Xena had this worked out all along. And Ares, tricky as ever - "I said you could. I never said you should". Nice. ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
