I think the story point that no one would recognize  Crassus
except his fellow politicians was bogus.  Romans of  the 
ruling classes were always giving speeches, in the  Senate
and in public, trying to get support, offering bribes, pepping 
up troops before a battle, etc.  They should have  come
up with another way to get rid of Crassus.
