[KTL Subject: [chakram-refugees] And still the kudos go on... Yet more of the endless nods to Xena as an endlessly enduring cultural icon. The winter 2007 issue of "bitch" magazine has not one but two Xena references. (The spring 2008 issue is now available but I haven't been able to find it in a store yet.) In an article about the resurgent Spice Girls and their role in 1990's Girl Power, Juliana Tringali writes, "With new pop possibilities in feminist theory, mainstream media became a source of Girl Power subtext. Many icons were named and celebrated in the mind-to-late '90's but the Spice Girls were not included. Is it time to give the Girls another look? Let's see how they compare to their better-appreciated counterparts more than a decade on." This is followed by a chart titled "Conflict and Resolution: Subtext V. Spice", comparing the Spice Girls to other '90's icons. Xena makes the cut as one of the "better-appreciated counterparts more than a decade on". Column one is pictures-we have Xena and Gabrielle, standing side by side with Xena's hand on Gabrielle's left shoulder. I think maybe it's from the end of "Motherhood" when they're looking at Eve down on the beach. In the next column, it says, Xena, Warrior Princess>>> (Editorial note: D'oh! NO ONE gets the semi-colon that belongs in the title) "Supertext: A female warrior travels the ancient world battling evil and involving herself in important historical moments with uncanny frequency." "Subtext: Along with Xena's romantic encounters with men, her relationship with her best friend Gabrielle has sexual undertones throughout the series. An episode in the last season even reveals them to be "true soulmates"." The final column is titled, "v. Spice>>>" "Sure, rumors flew that Sporty Spice (Melanie Chishold was gay, but they were founded solely on a stereotype of athletic women that Melanie C. eventually spoke out against. Xena offered viewers a representation of sexuality that was both loosely defined and unconventionally portrayed, stereotypes be damned. With bonus points for being groundbreaking, Xena emerges victorious." And in the same issue, in an article discussing the concept of Jewish American Princesses, Julia Appel writes, "In a YouTube video spoof called Xada the Jewish Princess, the heroine of Xena, Warrior Princess is transformed into a J. A. P." (Page 51) As I love to say, Xena will never die. KT ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
