"Another interesting thing I noticed - (from the interview) "Early on in the series of XENA, there were discussions about adding another woman character so that they would be a trio. Ephiny in Hooves and Harlots was to be the new addition. However, by the time that episode aired, we all had so fallen for Renee's portrayal of Gabrielle that we didn't want to diminish her or, heaven forbid, put her in a position to kill her off." that was really interesting. for me, it brings up two things: one, that gabrielle's slow process of becoming a warrior might not have been played out the same way. ephiny was an established warrior. second, you know, i'm reading missy good's fan fiction on merwolf.com, and am reminded that the whole amazon princess and queenship thing was played out over a period of several years, but might have played out differently if ephiny had joined them. in some ways, perhaps, cr, if ephiny had been part of a threesome (not withstanding the possibility, as tapert mentioned, that this could have resulted in gabrielle being killed off), perhaps ephiny would have acted like a hinge between the other two, as a connector. i really would have liked to see ephiny more in the whole series. there were several other things in the interview that were VERY interesting, in hindsight. tapert said, "Gabrielle was originally conceived of as the sidekick. The person who could do the talking when XENA couldn't or wouldn't. She was Irv the Explainer as I call that role. Look to Iolaus on Herc for the template for Gabrielle. She was also the weekly damsel in distress but that grew tiresome quickly. The series was never conceived as a duel role series." it wasn't? yes, i guess looking at the initial year as i'm doing with a friend now (i just converted a new person to xena: warrior princess) renee o'connor had guest star billing. so it's like, the actors and the characters they played out, recreated the series. i really believe that so much of this was the dynamism of the relationship between lawless and o'connor. tapert also said, regarding Friend in Need, "Also, we vacillated on whether to really kill her or not. Missy [Good], who read the finale before it shot, weighed in heavily that it was a bad idea." i was afraid to post this, wondering if we'd get into a rather messy discussion, as so many of us did at the end of the series, as to how angry some of us were that xena was killed off. i am so glad they at least asked missy good. i am sorry they didn't pay attention to her. she did a good job bringing xena back in the subtext fanfiction that she and several other people wrote. is this old hat for everyone? did everyone on this group catch on to her work before i did? which was just last year. for those who haven't read her resurrection story (very different than "Fallen") here's the website. it's been very good winter reading. http://www.xwpsubtextvs.com/ that's all. be well, everyone. lilli ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
