KT.....did you get to watch it? fun to know that your friend didn't leave you after seeing "bitter suite" : -) oh, and one one more thought. sometimes it feels really weird to be talking about lucy lawless, or any other actor, in a chat like this. it's almost like gossiping about her behind her back, or in front of her actually. does she read this list? i would not be a famous person for anything in the world and have to deal with that. and wherever she is, i hope she is well. and i hope everyone else out there is well. lilli ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Here in Noo Zealand we had to wait TWO YEARS for Sin Trade! (Gabbiphobe that I am, I didn't mind leaving the little blonde kid down the Dahak hole for two years, but I was getting all sad waiting for Xena). As it happened, for me it was more like six weeks, because an angel - err, tape fairy - in England, in whose debt I forever am, started sending me tapes for the rest of the series. Still, it was a bit of a struggle to avoid being spoiled, especially about the ending - the New Zealand Herald (our biggest daily paper) got me with a newspaper broadsheet (or whatever those posters are outside newsstands) that said "XENA LOSES HER HEAD" in six-inch-high letters. Bastards! Incidentally, BSG here is about 2/3 the way through Season 2 on TV - I'm not watching, seen all of S2 already on DVD. > BUT! Imagine this--our secretary (the one whom I had tape Bittersuite for > me because I HAD to go a wedding that night and who, when I came by to pick > up the tape, just stood in her doorway staring at me in disbelief and > repeating, "THIS is the show you love so much?! Well, > actually, I never even made it through the doorway.) I had a similar experience - we had overseas visitors staying with us for a few days, and the guy would have liked to go out to the pub (Auckland didn't really have any English-style pubs with atmosphere, though, certainly not back then) - and the previous Xena ep had been A Necessary Evil which really rocked! I was expecting more of Callisto and Velasca so I persuaded him to stay home - and what did we get? A Day in the Life. Minya, Hower and in-jokes. Like, subtexters may be able to find a bit more in that ep, but for a non-Xenite there is nothing of interest. I was silently cringing in embarrassment. (The amateur shrinks among you can now say "So that's why he hates the subtext" - but you'd be wrong ;) > Anyway, she LOVES Burn Notice! Like for example, did Lucy do a good performance in Battlestar Galactica and will she be back in Season 4? It's okay even if we think the actor's performance was bad - it's out there, and we can have an opinion of it. (Though personally I try not to be too scathing - suppose it was some young actor's first ever part in a big TV series and she eagerly Googles to find out how it was received and all she can find is a comment that "Hera's priestess looked like Argo but you could easily tell them apart - Argo's the one that can act", how's that going to strike her?**) But if Lucy does an 'off' performance I'm more likely to say so, she has enough winners she can afford the occasional loser. ** Disclaimer - I made that up, no connection with any actual Hera's priestess! Speculation's okay too, IMO ("I think she'll be in Season 4 of BSG because when she was boxed in Season 3, did you notice yadda yadda .... ") - it's fun, and harmless, though I guess we should try to avoid starting rumours. OTOH personal speculation or gossip is an invasion of privacy and really ought to be avoided. Specially malicious gossip ("Gabrielle always gets crap writing because Lucy's married to the producer" sort of stuff). I got into a few flamewars over that sort of thing, too, in the good old days :) IMO, of course. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Sanz writes (p. 36) "The idea of gigantism itself has traditionally been associated with a congenital lack of intelligence. It is a fact that there are innumerable stories from all periods that tell of giants, ogres and cyclops who are fooled by the astuteness of human beings." So the scene in the first episode, in which Gabrielle outwitted the cyclops ("Thanks the gods for dumb cyclopses") is based on folklore. (does that make it 1998 or so?). well, i have a bit of a challenge in my life and my neighborhood, so the decision is, do you share this with people you know on the internet, some of whom are strangers, and some of whom are friends? i live in a poor working class, interracial neighborhood in minneapolis, minnesota in the u.s. i've been here 19 years, and for some reasons that have to do with disability, i have been looking to move to a different area with bldgs that would be more accessible. but this week we had a killing in our neighborhood. two blocks from me. it is very sad, and very frightening. the poorest families are african american, and the tension in the neighborhood had not been good for a while. this week, a man bicycling through the neighborhood, who was not from the neighborhood, apparently was stopped and killed. he was white. for those who want to know, i am white. people are so scared, everyone, everyone is staying in their homes. i am frightened. it's really one thing to watch tv, but another to deal with violence around us, and in our lives, and know what to do about it, and what not to do, and be caring to ourselves and other people. and also stay powerful. if you can, in whatever form you do it, please send thoughts/prayers/wishes to everyone in this neighborhood for peace. thanks all. lilli ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
