Nisbet says that Lane Fox refused all payment, but insisted that in every Macedonian cavalry charge in the film, he would be there, on horseback and in correct armor, leading the charge. Nisbet remarks that whatever the film's failings, it did one thing right -- "It made one old man very happy." This charming story made me think why Xena never had a historical adviser. First, XWP didn't aim to be accurate about ancient history and mythology and certainly didn't worry about accurate costumes. They were doing a pastiche of history and myth. Second, the producers knew enough about ancient history and lore to do what they wanted to do. XWP was not always a fantasy show, but it was made as a fantasy-- story and spectacle came before history. Peel was this cool, sophisticated, "i really don't care what you think" attitude who, allowing for the james bond kind of sexism that seeped into the show, was still very powerful. the actress, diana rigg, herself i see as someone who is a spark of light, and an excellent actor. i'm aware that she was actually a shakespearean actor. there was definitely a feminist edge to her personality, and she kicked butt with men, often saved her cohort Steed, and didn't just rely on him or other men saving her, which was a real change from what we were seeing on TV in those days. lilli ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
