No, it shows fans in 'newer' geekdom mode. Firefly hasn't been around as long as Xena. Simply put, when a show has been around that long, the fan base is not less devoted, we've just calmed down and concern ourselves with things that matter. A site where a person can sit there and vote 17,000 times a day is NOT an accurate reflection of a poplarity of a series. A show that still has active sites, mailing lists and conventions when it's been over as long as it's been on, THAT is a reflection of a kick ass series. The fact that the Xena fan base will follow the cast and crew throughout their careers THAT is a reflection of kick ass fan base. I wonder if any of these Firefly fans were watching Gina Torres in "Standoff". I was - because she was in ONE ep of Xena (well, and the fact that she kicks ass). ;) Julie "XT" Ruffell www.bitchofrome.com "I don't do this to die. But it suffered, I think, from a bit too much 'action' which made it often difficult to follow the story, and from the 'half-hour' eps which didn't give time to develop a story adequately. And from being paired with Jack of all Trades - the two shows were just too unlike each other to make up a coherent hour. What bemused me the most was the huge number of the sci-fi/fantasy shows that do have fans who will sit there and vote. I think this not only speaks to the geekdom of space opera sword and sorcery fandom but also to certain attributes of that geekdom. In terms of them having the time to get online and vote so much for example. But I think the Firefly fans are still hurting over their show being cancelled so early in its run. And I think that is certainly an impetus behind people voting for it-get a viral Nanny-nanny-boo-boo out there to the suits who shut it down. I think the original Star Trek probably has the same types of fans-who the hell else would have watched TJ Hooker? Though I have to say, I do like Boston Legal. Er... actually - Firefly got a movie - Serenity is the Firefly movie AND IT KICKS MAJOR ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The movie was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than the show ever was. As to Xena - Xena ended when it was ready to end. Firefly was cut without any resolution. Farscape was cut after one BRUTAL cliffhanger. Some series NEED a movie so they can END the series. A Xena movie spits on the finale of the series - and whether you like FIN or not, it's just lame to spit on your own series finale (planned finale). The movie was > WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than the show ever was. Haven't seen the movie, but I'm prepared to believe it was better than the show. Not least because IMO Gina was criminally under-used in the series. And parts of it were just a little too much stock cowboy-western-with-spaceships. Heck, they even had cows. And horses. I kept expecting Clint Eastwood to ride onto set > As to Xena - Xena ended when it was ready to end. Firefly was cut without > any resolution. Farscape was cut after one BRUTAL cliffhanger. Some series > NEED a movie so they can END the series. A Xena movie spits on the finale > of the series - and whether you like FIN or not, it's just lame to spit on > your own series finale (planned finale). I do agree there. Farscape's last episode _could_ easily have been altered to leave out the surprise cliffhanger ending, and it would have made logical sense plot-wise - there wouldn't have been any plot threads left dangling. But since it was backstabbed at the last minute by SciFi the producers chose not to change the surprise cliffhanger ending - in which I think they were absolutely correct (though they received equal praise and curses for it from the fans :) As it was, the two-part miniseries we eventually got as a finale helped a little, but it wasn't (IMO) a real substitute for the full fifth season we were expecting. The problem was, that the whole of Season 4 was written as a steady build-up to a final ep that was intended to lead into a whole new Season 5. So the tail end of Season 4 just didn't have the feel of a series that was 'winding up', it felt like a series that was going to continue. And that's why even a tidy end to the last episode would have felt premature, unexpected. Now Xena, as you say, was ready to end. It had that feeling, and this was because they had a whole season to plan it. I do think a Xena movie would be superfluous. Cleo 2525, now, had the same 'sudden' feel about the ending as Farscape - though it didn't end on an explicit cliffhanger, the tone of the last ep suddenly changed about two-thirds the way through - my guess is they'd shot about half of it when the cancellation came through and they quickly changed the ending to make a series finale out of it. Firefly, now - I can't recall the final ep, but I think it felt like 'just another ep' - no big loose ends, but no major threads tied up. But then, Firefly had a number of story lines but none that really engaged me in wanting to see how they played out. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. IMO there are four really good things about BSG - the main reason I watch - Six, Sharon, d'Anna and Starbuck. I wouldn't care to say which of those is the most interesting character, IMO they're all awesome. Okay, it was a good drama before Lucy, and it just got better when she arrived. The movie was > WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than the show ever was. Now that's interesting. Do most fans feel that way? The X Files movie certainly got a lot of flak from a lot of fans. Was it Firefly that was continued due to a rich fan underwriting it? I know that many fan bases get into "Hey kids, let's put on the movie ourselves!" But I believe I heard that in one case with one very rich invester it actually happened that a fan underwrote a film. Of course-that could just be a piece of fanfic. . . (Over the years I have heard people confuse what happened to the "real Xena" with events from Xena fanfic. And pass it on as gospel.) > > As to Xena - Xena ended when it was ready to end. Firefly was cut > without any resolution. Farscape was cut after one BRUTAL cliffhanger. > Some series NEED a movie so they can END the series. A Xena movie spits > on the finale of the series - and whether you like FIN or not, it's just > lame to spit on your own series finale (planned finale). I would argue that it doesn't have to spit on it's finale. Especially since Rob had planned when shooting FIN to make four more Xena telemovies after the series ended and actually thought he had the deal in hand to do so. Xena died so often that her death in FIN is certainly not an insurmountable problem. And you don't spit on it, you take it into the canon--Xena would be different and would have to act differently after FIN-she's finished with her atonement quest, so they'd need either a new story engine or they'd just have to do some stand-alone swash and buckle stuff. Whatever happens next has to honor FIN, absolutely. I LOVE FIN. But I'd also love to see more of Lucy as Xena. I would give a LOT to see more of Xena. As I've said before, I see Luce all the time. But I haven't seen Xena in years-and I really miss seeing her. *sigh* > > Also - as we know, the rights to Xena have been tied up in a messy legal > mess. And now it's 6 years later. This isn't a diss - but thems is all > getting older. Do we join Gabrielle six years later, bringing back to > life a Xena who for some reason has aged six years even though she was > dead? LOL Oh yeah, like Lucy looks so old now. Grin. But that is certainly one factor to consider. As Lucy told us at the last con, Rob makes it clear that she was "old" when she got the part of Xena-being 27 at the time. Had it been produced in Hollywood, had she BEAN in Hollywood, I bet she'd never have gotten the part. (We all know the story of how tenuous her getting the part was anyway. And the inconvenience of being in New Zealand during pilot season played a huge role in Lucy getting tapped to be Xena.) But I truly believe the "elephant in the corner of the room that no one talks about" is not so much the legal problem, though it has delayed Rob making a movie with someone else. The real problem is that Xena is a woman and has a female sidekick. It's a chick flick to the boys in suits. And as the boys in suits know, "Chick flicks don't make money!" So every time a chick flick makes money and has over its run in theaters and then the sales on DVDs a respectable return--they are amazed! They can't believe it! I remember the huge stunned reaction to the success of Bend It Like Beckham. I found a link online that said that movie cost about 4.5 million British pounds and has earned over 85 million dollars worldwide. And how 'bout that Thelma and Louise? Cost 16.5 million to make and grossed 45.3 million. And My Big Fat Greek Wedding 5 million to make, 241.5 million in grosses. Just amazin'. . . Somehow when chick flicks "fail" it's because they're chick flicks. When "regular movies" i.e., flicks about boys fail, they're also amazed-but scramble to find many reasons how this could happen! And fire lots of other boys over it. > >> And then ALL of Tarzan. Now that's devotion. > > I completely agree. I only watched Lucy's scenes myself. LOL! Laugh! I am SO glad she moved on. And I so glad that Battlestar went after her. I hadn't been watching Battlestar but I do now. It's an excellent series. And one that was worthy of Lucy's time and devotion to her craft. And happily, they knew that too-and showcased her, making her character's journey a huge part of the storyline. And now putting her up for best supporting actress. YAY! In that poll, I'm torn between voting for James (Gaius) and Michael (Tigh) as best supporting actor. I think Michael is an amazing actor. But James sure rips his heart out. But (silly enough) I loath Gaius so much that I'm sure that's playing a part in my slight disgust at voting for "Gaius". But I do leap back to reality and realize the reason I hate Gaius is that James is such a good actor that he created such a loathsome toad when playing him. So actually I'm staggering votes for them-one time it's James, next time it's Michael. I don't vote in most of the other categories because I haven't seen hardly any of those things that are listed on there. Ah, how NICE to have some free time again to play on the lists. It ended as everyone went off to war!!! The last shot was the battle just getting started. DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH! > Firefly, now - I can't recall the final ep, but I think it felt like 'just > another ep' - no big loose ends It was just another ep because it ended in the middle of the season. They didn't even get a full season. >But then, Firefly had a number of story lines but none that really engaged me in > wanting to see how they played out. OMG how could you NOT be addicted to River's storyline? It was so underused in the series, but it was pretty much the main focus of the movie. MWHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With my darling computer in the hospital, I've been off-line since the 25th, only to come back to see that in the 4-day interim FIREFLY has cut our lead from 16,000 to 14,000, having accrued another 4000 votes to our 2000. At this rate, in 4 more weeks we're TOAST! And encouraged by their success, Firefliers are much more likely to step up the pace. Even if we're about all that's left of active Xenites, haven't y'all ANY friends you can strong-arm?
