(In fact, I had this same discussion on my other list about a certain singer. ;) ) The costs to put on such events are quite substantial (I know, having put on 7 Xenafests here locally myself). The hotel/venue will charge you for every little thing: tables, chairs, mics, A/C, the room. If you order food, there's a catering charge. Then you are talking costs to transport the talent to your location, plus their talent fee (if any--in our case, we would hope they would accept air fare/lodging/hospitality in Hawai'i as payment for their time). We are talking BIG $$ (at least for me), here. To give you an idea, when Rob Weisbrot, the author, came out here to talk, his air fare alone came out to over $1,000! Since only about 20 fans came out to see him, @ $8/head, I bore the brunt of his air fare, hotel, meals, etc.! When I contacted Mindy Clarke's agent to see if she'd come out here, I was told her speaking fee alone (not including air fare) was $5,000! Further, in a previous job at my university, I arranged a conference workshop on a neighbor island for about a hundred participants. They were paying for their own hotel, but we were paying for their meals and activties over about 3 days. The conference fee we had to charge them in order to *just break even* (and remember, this is a non-profit university) was about $350! This didn't even include a well-known star dropping by to sing or entertain, and this was on a remote island out in the boonies.....;P And when Creation came out here many years ago to put on a ST/XWP con, they charged about $20/head, only about 200 combined ST/XWP fans showed up, and I heard from TPTB at Creation that this was a *loss* for them--just not enough people showed up. And we weren't even treated to LL/ROC at this con......;P Soooooo.......yes, big stars cost big $$, and it all depends on what attendance is projected, compared to the costs, as to what they end up charging the fans. It's very difficult to say Creation or any other fan organization is over-charging the fans, like Cheryl said, unless you know their costs and whether they even make a profit--you just have to determine for yourself whether it's worth it.
