McFarland, 2006. (p. 55) 153. Callisto. Xena: Warrior Princess, Syn., 1995-2001. Played by Hudson Leick. Callisto is a beautiful but extremely vengeful warrior of ancient Greece (she, like Xena, did not actually exist in Greek or Roman mythology). Callisto was born in the village of Cirra and had a normal childhood. She enjoyed her family and the simple pleasures of her life in Cirra. She was a bright girl and learned much from her mother - how to keep house, how to cook, how to fend for herself and most importantly, she was being groomed to become the prefect wife (Callisto had contemplated marriage when she became of age). Her life changed dramatically when she was a teenager. Xena's army invaded her village. Despite her reputation, Xena would not harm women or children. However, during the raid, a fire was accidentally started. Callisto managed to escape the fire that killed her family and destroyed her home. At that moment Callisto became filled with rage and vowed to destroy Xena for what she caused to happen. While not explained, Callisto somehow managed to survive on her own. She honed her fighting skills and hatred as she grew to become as ruthless as the woman she hated. Callisto dresses in a rather provocative, bosom-revealing outfit and is an expert with a sword, as well as her fists. She is blonde, coy and has pity for no one. She has set her goal on killing Xena and that desire is her driving force. She destroys whatever stands in her way and feels she is unstoppable. She has killed many people (some just for fun) and has her followers -- men who will go into battle and die for her. Callisto's attempts to kill Xena are the focal point of episodes that feature her (a recurring character who, through her devious deeds, became an immortal, then a god, and finally an angel. She never achieved her goal.) (p. 140) 39. Gabrielle, Xena: Warrior Princess, Syn., 1999-2005. Played by Renee O'Connor. Gabrielle, called "That irritating little blonde who travels with Xena," is an adventurous but peace-loving young woman who attached herself to Xena, the Warrior Princess, to become her friend and traveling companion. Like Xena, Gabrielle did not exist in ancient Greek or Roman mythology. Gabrielle was born in the Greek village of Potidaea. It was when Xena saved Potidaea from the warlord Draco that Gabrielle became fascinated by her. Gabrielle yearned for excitement and adventure and with her gift for gab, talked Xena into letting her tag along. Gabrielle is sweet and innocent. She solved problems with words and stories. It is with her stories that Gabrielle found her true calling as a bard. She kept records called "The Xena Scrolls" that detailed her and her mentor's adventures. She had one produced in the style of a Broadway play called "Gabrielle and Xena: A Message of Peace." Gabrielle later attended the Academy for Performing Bards in Athens. She later wrote a play called "Fallen Angel" and was called "The Visionary Voice of Athens." Gabrielle also became one of the Followers of Eli (a religious prophet who professed love). Daisies are Gabrielle's favorite flower and she loves to cook (she treasures her frying pan). Gabrielle's life changed somewhat when she saved the life of Ephiny, an Amazon queen. An Amazon is a warrior of Ares, the God of War. To repay Gabrielle for saving her life, Ephiny bestows the title of Amazon Princess and teaches her how to fight (something she was previously reluctant to learn from Xena, but now found it necessary for her and Xena's survival.) (p. 416-417) 1165. Xena, Xena: Warrior Princess, Syn., 1995-2001. Played by Lucy Lawless. Xena was once a ruthless warrior in the age of mythology who changed her ways to become a champion of those threatened by evil. Xena did not exist in Greek or Roman mythology, but her essence is based on the gods and warriors of the time. Xena was born in the ancient Greek village of Amphopolis and cared for by her mother Cyrene. She has two brothers, Lyceus and Toris. Her father is unknown to his children and deserted the family when Xena was very young. Xena worked with her mother in the family-owned tavern and had a relatively normal life until she became 17. At this time, the warlord Cortese threatened Amphipolis and Xena organized a group of reluctant-to-fight villagers into a small army. Xena's army managed to defeat Cortese but many villagers were killed, including Xena's brother Lyceus. Now hated and feeling guilty for the misery she caused, Xena left her home to build an army to defend Amphipolis against future attacks. Xena's good intentions tuned to evil when she became corrupted by power and fought for the thrill of battle. She soon earned a reputation as a ruthless warrior princess. It is not until she meets Hercules that Xena is made to see her evil ways and vows to redeem herself by helping others. Xena is proficient in the art of swordplay. Her weapon of choice is the deadly Chakram (a flat, round piece of iron with razor sharp blades that when thrown acts as a boomerang.) Those who oppose Xena also have to fear "The Pinch," a deadly technique she uses to stop the flow of blood to the brain (when she pinches a nerve on the back of the neck.) Despite her evil ways, Xena would never kill women or children. She travels with a young woman named Gabrielle. Obviously, Terrace, writing 1485 profiles of characters from hundreds of shows, is not a profound expert on every show. If he watched any of the shows carefully, it wasn't Xena.
