IS she STATING this; and yes admittedly i jumped the gun on this; being aggravated as i am about how finds related to women's lives have been misinterpreted, etc, for instance as relates to goddess worshipping issues and artifacts in many cultures. i assumed she chose the word "disposed" intentionally. the tone of her writing sounded pretty rational, not hyped up emotionally. so the question is, did she mean the word she used and what did it mean, or as you suggested, were those bones among those transferred to the royal college of surgeons. is that a source where mccaffrey did some of her research? i assume behind her abstract was some very deep research. but thanks for encouraging going deeper and staying clear. however, my allegedly jumping the gun still might have been accurate. and so may her claim, whether we like it or not. i claim the right to righteous indignation. : ) the important thing for me is being willing to say that our sheroes (maya angelou term) and heros all have places where they are confused, and make mistakes, that we be willing to state truth out loud, not pedestal people. that doesn't mean we are attacking them. we are all confused in different areas. it doesn't take away from what they did well. but with archaeological research and many other areas of research and science, i am learning to question intent, and ethics, including whether researchers were/are open to "seeing" truth in front of them, and whether that even mattered. and because i am so angry, sekhmet, about the history of the field going into so many cultures of non-europeans, still at the time woolley did his research, and their intention was not always respectful of non-european peoples, but was a tool for the researchers to be famous, to say "*I* found this," whether it was tombs of famous pharoahs in egypt, or discovering ancient troy. and i believe that women's lives really didn't mean as much. the intention too often was power and fame for the researcher. (woolley was knighted when he returned from this expedition.) or imply such as with british archaeology at that time, that the british empire was great, and see, we continue to be great by unearthing all these tombs and finding these magnificent things...like gold. and getting to control the cultural interpretation and wealth of other peoples. so yes, i am jaded and angry at the field, and the field is changing/has changed. and i know/have known/know of very wonderful people in the field, ethical ethical people, though i don't do this professionally almost did, but do it actively as a research hobby for other work i do. and i've benefited greatly from all those people who have done this work, which i love. but the field is still filled with so many white people interpreting cultures of color, and so many men compared to women, that i strongly believe more changes are required. "the truth is out there" .....not a xena quote, but appropriate! lilli ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
