["Xena Torres" Subject: [chakram-refugees] RE: ancient sumer's xena this is very interesting stuff to me folks, so thanks for discussing it with me. meredith said, "archaeology is also littered with tales of base charlatanry, and so the notion of an early-20th-century archaeologist tossing away the bones of a skeleton that might prove him wrong in some way down the road is, sadly, not that surprising to me at all. " and sekhmet said, "Except Woolley was no charlatan! One of the things he's remembered for is his careful methodology, so this idea of him "discarding" human remains is very strange to me-- unless the local authorities insisted that the bones from Ur be given "decent burial" after they were found during excavation (which has happened occasionally at other archaeological sites). " like you sekhmet, i did a bit more researching on web, and found an archaological conference site with more info from presenter Kathleen McCaffrey, the person disputing the previous assigning of male gender to what may have been a female queen. it says, "The seal and weapons did indeed belong to the buried skeleton, which may have been that of a female Sumerian ruler. That claim has sparked fierce debate, however, especially because Woolley disposed of the bones shortly after discovering them." didn't give them over for buriel. disposed of them. sheesh. sekhmet, i agree with you and respect the fact that he did incredible work in the field. however, bias in interpretation did, and still exists, in the field. thank goodness more women in the field. http://iwa.univie.ac.at/rai51.html another interesting site below with summaries of several "gender abstracts" by professionals in the field, both women and men, at a university in britain. they are looking at this particular issue of discounting of women in historical finds, and misinterpreting finds based on male gender bias. this might be interesting to some of you. http://www.arcl.ed.ac.uk/gender/Gender%20Abstracts.htm lilli - who is into archaeological research ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Well, I'm not disputing your basic premise that an archaeologist's presuppositions can affect his interpretations of a site and its artifacts, because after years of study that's obvious to me, but "disposed of" covers a lot of ground, so I've been looking for an independent source (i.e. someone besides McCaffrey) where there might be some info regarding their actual "disposition"-- i.e. something that either backs up or contradicts McCaffrey's statement. All I've been able to find out so far is that, according to the East Anglian Daily Times of November 25, 1929, the "human remains from Ur" were in the hands of the Royal College of Surgeons (presumably in London), where they were to be studied. I'm still clueless as to what might have happened to them after that, except for finding a brief mention in a very long and tedious article referring to "skeletal remains preserved in wax" that upon investigation after decades of storage turned out to be wrapped-up jewelry instead (I've also located two recent articles online that appear to be relevant, but they're at sites requiring a membership fee to explore, and I can't afford that). I think that if Woolley delivered the remains to other scientists (or doctors), he's off the hook regarding throwing them away himself. - --Sekhmet ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Hey everyone! Just a heads up that I have some killer new interview hitting bitchofrome.com, likely by mid October. One interview with a couple that you will all know, though I'm not revealing names just yet until I have the interview finished (saying "Yes" to an interview is always one thing, actually getting it conducted at times - things can happen. I had one lined up with Zoe Bell that faltered last second, so not counting the harpies before they hatch this time). I'll release names when I've finished the interview. ;) The other is a truly rare and unique interview, unlike anything you've seen with a "Xena" cast member before. It will be a MUST for Adrienne Wilkinson fans because I had the absolute pleasure of hanging out with Adrienne in a relaxed, non-Xena event setting for about nine hours on Saturday. Adrienne has graciously allowed me to 'report' on this most stellar time together and things discussed and it will be merged with an interview I will be conducting with her in the next week or two (depending on the busy woman's schedule). :) So stay tuned!
