Well, it ends next week, so they have to start flushing them out. What I love is all the positive mentions that Lucy is getting in reviews and in the press. A show like this is a very easy target and deservedly so. It brings out the "Oh, let's see how smug and clever and above all this pop trash I can be" in many reviewers. And many are indeed slamming almost everyone involved in the show. But what I've noticed is that most often when someone has something positive to say about the show, they say it about Lucy. From the first night, I thought that Jericho and Hal were the worst with Carly just barely better than them. Cheech was better than all three of them I thought. But Cheech has this "affection for the funny old uncle we loved as kids" thing going and I admit I'm in that bleacher of fans. (We lie around toking weed and about every five minutes or so, someone forces out in that strained voice one gets when trying to talk while not letting any smoke escape your lips, "Dave's not here" which always sends us into absolute paroxysms of laughter at our own creative wit. Sometimes someone laughs so hard they fall through the bleachers but being so stoned, they are completely relaxed, so no one dies. The rest of us just all laugh even harder at the thudding sound as "someone bites the dust".) After Cheech, I thought that Lucy and Lea were pretty close in voice. And I think that Jai and Alphonse are the top contenders--they've got very good voices and are just really pros at performing their songs. I think this was close to the judges ranking also--just from watching the order in which they called the contestants "safe" on that first night. However, like American Idoal, Dancing with the Stars, all of these "competitive" reality shows, this is not about who is the best in the tested field. These things are nothing but popularity contests. And the minute it became a popularity contest, of course Lucy was going to be a big contender. I didn't think she would win. But for her sake, I just wanted her to last a few weeks. And to get to sing with Smokey Robinson. And she's done both. Go Luce! I think one great thing from this is that it's obvious that there is a huge number of fans still loving Lucy. This is palpable evidence of our devotion to her--our willingness to vote for her in many venues, to show up wherever she goes, to support all of her endeavors. I think this is being noticed and will be something that won't totally escape the notice of even the thirteen year old boys (or at least, those folks with the mindset of thirteen year old boys) who run the movie/TV industry. Lucy having a big fanbase is a really good thing for folks who want to milk fans for money to notice. I LOVED that sign--"We want a Xena movie". Talk it up--why not? Anyway, I have to admit I had great doubts when Lucy first announced this. I felt a curl of both disbelief and distate in my gut when I heard about it. But then I heard her saying why she was doing it--to take the opportunity to sing with great singers. I love her take on life--I love how she grasps every opportunity. Doing this 'cause she wants to, and not letting herself be disuaded from her desire just because these types of shows are prime joke fodder. As she says on her site, in her house, Deuts is known as the "Dreams do come true" show. As I said recently, she reminds me of Howard Roark in the Fountainhead. At a rough time in his life after some perceived failures due to how creative and innovative his work is, he takes a job working in a quarry--a totally menial job. A friend suggests to him that he's setting himself up to be kicked by his enemies when he's down. And he's just totally dismissive of that attitude--he essentially says, "Why would that bother me? Why the hell would I worry about what anybody else thinks?" I remember when reading it as a teenager, being just gobsmacked by this total dedication to self that he had. That he would do whatever he wants to do in whatever way he wants to to do it. In some ways, this is the same thing that drew me to living in Alaska--we just don't involve ourselves in trying to decide how others should live. (We might think it, but we don't get in other people's faces and try to discourage them from doing whatever they choose to do.) I like living in a place like that. And Lucy certainly has the same attitude Rourke has. Sure critique of art and mass media AND politics and politicians AND sports figures and their game is a long established tradition. Any famous person gets constant advice from the masses on how they should live their life. And Lucy knew this would be part of the package. And essentially said, "Well, just f*ck 'em. I want to sing with legendary singers. And I will." And she did. Go Lucy! KT ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
