Soooo what else is new......???? But also, people who *really aren't talented* tend not to last very long in the biz. Longevity is a testament to quality. It may not be our cup of tea, but it does say something. Milli Vanilli were a flash in the pan. And, I suspect, Clay Aiken may be, too. Besides, Barry can not only sing, but compose and produce as well. Name others who can do the same and still be at the top of the charts. Not many, I'd suspect. So, where are LL's 40 albums and 40 decades of performing, eh?? >And those electronic patches don't get made to every professional >singers' recordings? Like for example Barry Manilow's 40 albums? I >think otherwise. :) - --Oh, Barry *loves* electronic patches and gizmos! Uses them all the time. But he can also sing acapella and without the gizmos. Can LL do that? I think Celeb Duets is proving she can't. And he performs *live* nightly at the LVHilton, and has toured *live* constantly for the past 30 yrs. Has LL done that and can she do that on a sustained basis? Again, that's the difference between being a "professional" and an "amateur". LL's putting out a celebrity charity CD (as only *one* singer amongst a bunch of others) still doesn't qualify her as a "professional", IMO. Who knows what was done on Bitter Suite? I know it wasn't "live" singing, though, as she's doing on Celebrity Duets." Yes that's exactly what a record producer does. Remember what David Foster said to Alfonso that he could make him sound so much better if he had him in the studio. When records are made they are mixed and vocals are sweetened. So it is hardly fair to point out that Lucy's singing would be patched since all studio recordings are manipulated to some extent. "Speaking of which, I watched Thurs. and Fri. nights, and it was *baaad*.....;P LL wasn't as bad as Carly or Cheech, but IMO she wasn't as good as Jai or Alfonse." Actually I thought Carly did much better Thursday and remember she is really out of herelement here. Jai is probably the best sing but he is also a proffessional singer - he has recorded a single, is in the process of recording an album and has sung on Broadway in Rent. His performances are good but he has a lot at stake here since he is trying to break out as a recording star. On Thurs. she was visibly nervous and was a little too thin in her voice, and then on Fri. I *really* didn't like the fact that she was using her sex to sell the song, and not her singing. I mean, what *was* that go outfit with the bare back about, anyway??! She was singing Footloose and not Ave Maria and she dressed a way that I am sure was approved of by the director of the show. Also let's face it sex plays a part in many female singers acts - Madonna and Tina Turner are no shrinking violets on stage. Lucy was performing and as such was entertaining the audience - that's all. "She really didn't quite hit all the notes on either night, and then she had the cheek to tell David Foster to "try and watch" her once in a while (meaning her singing wasn't selling the song, so he should watch her body more?)! " Well I watched that part again since I didn't notice it the first time - it seemed to me is was a little joke to put on a brave face because I think was little upset at that point. My concern is that she's using her acting skills to make up for her lack of singing skills, and hoping that will "sell" the song, rather than honing her singing skills to be where they should be. And that's different from being a singer who acts. All great singers "act" when singing. You have to capture the emotion and heart of any song and great singers do that. Lucy uses her acting skills to sell that's not a bad thing - technically skilled singer with no emotion or acting skill would be a bore. From pop to opera all great singers act while singing.
