Subject: [chakram-refugees] LL - celebrity duets i could be sticking my foot in my mouth here about the show tonight, but here goes. first, i thought it took a lot of guts for lucy lawless to get up and do what she did on the show, especially to go on first. i don't know how many people especially from the u.s. realize what a big deal it is for someone from another country to perform here when everyone else on the show is (i'm betting) from here. u.s. audiences are a little obnoxious and superfically into hype in my opinion. i know LL is trying to make a name and career for herself outside of xena, here in the u.s., and it's great. sharon, if you are passing on comments to lucy, here are a few other supportive things i'd like to say. you don't have to suck up to u.s. audiences, especially with the female demur stuff, toprove to them you are "female" in someway different from other strong roles you've played. i'm concerned, in the process of working into the entertainment industry here, you will lose the center of who you really are. a very powerful new zealand woman with alot of talent. katherine hepburn carried alot of personal power, and yet even though she had to, as a woman, give in to certain things in the industry, she still showed her power. lucy, that power you used in xena, it's not about xena. it's about you. use it in your singing. please. you have the voice and the talent. yes, keep honing your acting and singing skills. but don't LOSE who you are. i believed the first song was the best, in terms of style, and yes agreed that connecting more with the other singer and the audience could improve. but that's also just nerves, and you're singing on public u.s. tv with bigwig entertainers! it's a big deal. but don't let them treat you like a "hick". that's negative u.s. slang for people from rural areas whose intelligence and power are not often appreciated by people from "big cities," and often downplayed as less significant. you are not any less significant than any person, any entertainer, in the u.s. connect with people in that caring way you connected with actors and directors and all the backstage people in xena. show them what that non-superficial contact and caring is all about. there are other good people in the show, so don't worry about the competition. let it go and be yourself. you have the ability. ENJOY it. and i'm REALLY glad that wayne brady, unlike all the judges, commented something to the effect, after the second duet, that he wasn't just looking at her body, but noticing her talent. lilli sprintz ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Subject: [chakram-refugees] LL on Celebrity Duets -round 1 Well... I can't believe I'm actually first to post something. I was getting kinda worried about how LL would fare on round one of this show. I guess I didn't pay close enough attention to the promos... I thought this was a one time special -- not a competition.[I know... pay attention next time Mark!] It seemed like everyone else was getting a chance to really belt out some strong songs on their first or second duet and Lucy was singing the soft-voices ones. In her second song I felt she was letting more of her talent show through, but it only peeked out a little bit. I thought I was noticing her subtle acting or emoting and really hoped everyone else [the judges] saw it too. I was worried also because everyone else seemed to be so much stronger in their second duet. I would have really enjoyed hearing her sing with Randy Travis... some really 'twangy' song!! Now just waiting for next week. Mark ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I guess since she wasn't voted off she did well enough. > It seemed like everyone else was getting a > chance to really belt out some strong songs on their first or second > duet and Lucy was singing the soft-voices ones. I dunno, her first song was kind of a belter! (But oh GOD, Michael Bolton. I needed to floss my ears after that. *shudder*) > In her second song I > felt she was letting more of her talent show through, but it only peeked > out a little bit. She hardly had any singing to do in that second one! I thought this was supposed to be "duets", not "singing sweet backing vocals for Smokey Robinson". *Please* tell me Little Richard isn't going to be a judge for the whole thing. I kid, of course. It's all for the favorite charity of the performers, and we do get to see Lucy, so I'll stick with it until she either wins (what do you bet she donates the money to the Starship Children's Hospital in Aukland) or she gets voted off, in which case we won't have to watch any more. If it wasn't for her, I know I wouldn't be watching. Ernie http://www.academyofbards.org/ http://www.academyofbards.org/authors/ernie_whiting.html "The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing.
