Subject: [chakram-refugees] Battling Siki

The flyleaf for Battling Siki, by Peter Benson, says that  Siki,
an African boxer of the 1920s, was once so famous that  "you
can find his legacy in the name of a popular rock group,  one of Che 
Guevera's lieutenants, a character on Xena: Warrior  Princess
and the Battling Siki hotel in the fighter's homeland,  Senegal."
There is no reference to XWP in the book's index, so I  can't
find if the author mentioned the Xena reference in the  book
or only in the book's blurb.  
 
Xena's Battling Siki was the little guy in Old Ares Had a  Farm.
According to one of the episode commentaries, he says  "They
call me Battling Siki."  Xena tells him, "Nobody ever  called
you that.  You just made it up.  If you don't want  to be called
Dead Siki, you'll be movin' on."  
 
According to wikipedia, Siki was an important European  boxer
until he was murdered at the age of 28.  The book blurb  says he 
was once one of the most famous black men in the  world.
Why XWP used his name for a comic runt I couldn't say.   The
XWP writers and producers put in so many obscure references 
that we are still figuring them out.   At least I wasn't aware of the 
meaning of Battling Siki until I saw this  book.

Subject: [chakram-refugees] Gina Torres and Sherri Rappaport

It looks like Gina will be on a new series this fall on FOX.  I don't remember
the name of the show but it appears to be about hostage negotiators.  Gina is
playing the annoyed and frustrated boss of a pair of unorthodox negotiators -
which is a fairly standard plot device for a lot of TV shows - I hope it is
better than the preview.

Also Sherri Rappaort is back on CSI as a lab tech.  I still say there are lot
of Xena alums on Jerry Bruckheimer's shows-Ted Rami on CSI NY, Hudson on CSI
as a biting dentist, Melinda Clark as a dominatrix on CSI, Katherine Morrison
on Cold Case, the actor who played Rafe on CSI as a father of a murder
suspect..  I wonder if her was fan of Xena.
