It was written by Stanley Kauffmann about actor Heath Ledger, comparing his work in "Casanova" and "Brokeback Mountain". DAMN! I copied this on the plane and I'm not totally sure of the first sentence--but I THINK it says, "The cowboy in Brokeback Mountain was an instance of completion encased in dignity. Like all good performances it was at once surprising and recognizable." That last line just exploded in my consciousness. Because this is EXACTLY what I have been trying to say about Lucy's acting choices. That she sometimes picks things to do or shows her character acting or reacting in ways that are not stereotypical nor traditional. That the way she has her characters respond to situations or dialogue from others is much more diverse and complicated than the pigeonholed, classified and set "checklist many actors work from. She chooses normal, regular, familiar expressions or gestures that are used in real life by real people. But she pulls them out and uses them in situations in which other actors tend to use a more uniform and taught response--her choices are different, unique, unexpected and yet absolutely appropriate. And what it took/takes me paragraphs to try to explain, Stanley Kauffman tagged in three words--"surprising and recognizable." I wonder what in heaven's name we'd ever get to see if Lucy and Heath ever worked together. I warmed up to Paige (HATED her to start), but she didn't replace Prue for me. Took me at least a season to accept her as her own character. ;) > Interestingly though the happy ending was nice, but after 8 years of my > time, I was not terribly sad about it ending. I agree. It was time for it to end. I thought it should have ended after season six, seven at the latest. ;) Eight years is pushing it for any series. Frankly, I have yet to see a series successfully pull off eight years without having some lame seasons. ;) > That is in stark contrast to FIN and the end of Xena. But, "Charmed" - that's now my second fav ender. :) Julie XT Ruffell Screenplay writer of AWAKENINGS AWAKENINGS OFFICIAL SITE: http://www.roachsrealm.com/awakenings XENA TORRES SITE: http://www.bitchofrome.com "Save me from the dreaded hopping bracelet." - Croft AWAKENINGS ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
