Tonight, the door of the Halliwell manor was closed for the final time. One of the few series to not only survive the loss of a lead character, but one that continued to thrive after it, Charmed was truly one of the best series on television. Seasons four and five were delivered with as much power, magic, comedy and family as the first three seasons of the series, even with the death of beloved Prue. Though Charmed suffered a few mediocre years with seasons six and seven and the dreaded face plant that was season eight, at least this time Charmed was given the chance to prepare for the end and deliver it the way the series deserves. The finale of season seven was originally written as the end of the series, and, though it worked as a series finale, it was worth enduring the weakest season of Charmed through the pit falls of season eight to have the finale the series was meant to have. Forever Charmed reminded us that the series was always about the family, not the battles. It was a journey about sisters, spouses, parents and children, about the bond of family and the love we find there. Though always spiced with some of the best comedy on television, at its core, Charmed was about its heart the interactions of the family members, especially the Charmed Ones, Piper, Phoebe and Paige (and Prue lets not forget). Moments ago, I watched the Halliwell manor door close for the final time (as is the tradition for the end of all season finales of the series), and with stupid grin and tear filled eyes, I applauded the end of my beloved power of three with a series finale that all fans can be proud of. I had longed for the end of the series after the abysmal eighth season, but, after Forever Charmed, I wish I could have another eight years. Many familiar faces return for the finale. Though Prue was not among them, her memory was still honoured by numerous mentions she was there in this small way, to make her a part of the end. And, in a true proven talent of the writers to show they remember things that have come before, and closed a point I had been wondering about ever since Piper opened P3. At the end, Charmed found its best and went out with a bang even if not literally this time. Blessed be. I guess I never really warmed up to Paige so it never packed the same punch for me. I did always watch (well 90% of the time) and I did enjoy the last few episodes hoping Billie would turn it around and the series would end happily. Interestingly though the happy ending was nice, but after 8 years of my time, I was not terribly sad about it ending. That is in stark contrast to FIN and the end of Xena. That was a series ending that ripped your heart out...yet I realize now was a gutsy, emotional roller coaster ride that may not have had the happy ending, but gave us the highest quality drama and brilliant acting & writing. They brought us to the edge of our seats and made the bold choice to leave us with a longing for the story to continue. If only it could.....I still miss it. ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
