The arrow (IIRC, it was the Arrow of Apollo) was the key to the temple on Kobol that turned out to be a map of the way toward Earth. The map was basically a circle of statues of all twelve signs of the Zodiac (i.e. all twelve Colonies) in a cave chamber whose ceiling was a view of the night sky as seen from Earth. All the Fleet has to do (!) is figure out where in the galaxy the stars look like that, and they will have their way home. Earth in the BSG universe is a mythical place that Roslin believes exists, and Admiral Adama claims to believe exists (but really doesn't). Adama only brought it up to give the remnants of humanity something to live for after the Cylon attack. In theory, the Fleet is headed toward Earth, though there has been no mention whatsoever of this journey since they found the map on Kobol. I'm glad they finally released the DVD set, because I'd have never bought that stinky set of VCR tapes. I couldn't bring myself to go see the movie, even for Marton. Watching the previews, it just didn't look like what it should have actually been. Maybe I'll rent it someday. I actually saw someone whining on Amazon about having purchased the DVD set and calling it utter crud because it was nothing like the movie. Hah! Sheesh. Just making sure, now that we've seen at least 2 other D'Annas in a lead role. I never got the impression that she was pro-human, in fact my impression was that she was very pro-cylon. I don't think she cares about the humans. She used the video footage she shot to subvert them - she sent it back to the cylon base on Caprica, by way of two raiders (they were so far out of explored space that the raiders acted as signal catchers, and zipped back to Caprica with their advanced FTL drives). If anything, she is interested in the humans, but for the cause of her mission to gather intelligence and send it home. She's anything but pro-human... >Now a suggestion for those who don't get BSG - all the shows so far have come >out on DVD so they can be rented either from Netflix (my favorite) or >Blockbuster. The show is excellent even when Lucy isn't on it. They *have* released the first half of Season II. They've taken to releasing seasons in halves, then later releasing it as a whole. But catching up should be easy if you have iTunes, because they sell eps on it for $1.99. Alrighty. Here we go. :) When President Roslin decided that Earth wasn't mythical, and that she was the "dying leader" that scriptures said would lead humanity to freedom on Earth, she asked Lieutenant Thrace ("Starbuck") to take the raider she'd captured and go get the Arrow of Apollo, which would be taken to the mythical Tomb of Athena on the once-mythical planet Kobol, and "point the way". Against orders, Starbuck took off. (Starbuck is *always* against orders. :) Starbuck went to Caprica, located the arrow in a museum, narrowly escaped with her life (that's an understatment), went back to the Galactica, went with the expedition to now-located Kobol, helped locate the Tomb of Athena, and placed the arrow into the statue of Sagittarian with his bow. The tomb then became a different place - a verdant field in nighttime, under a vast, starry sky, and they were surrounded by monolithic star charts that happened to be the Zodiac that they were all familiar with from the ancient symbols of their colonies. They wondered where exactly they were, when Starbuck realized they were standing on Earth. From their position on Earth, they determined familiar landmarks, like the constellations and M8, and decided they would head for that nebula and begin looking for Earth. (Note, for those just coming into BSG, there is a character called Lee "Apollo" Adama, but he has nothing to do with this mythical Apollo.) I think people tend to write it off too quickly before seeing it, as it's sci-fi. I think they're expecting a bunch of hokey effects and monster-of-the-week storylines (and really bad makeup to go with it). Oh, and the soundtracks are equally as fantastic. So I ain't no spring chicken. What can I say? S P O I L E R SPACE First off, I want sooo badly to be irritated. I crossed my fingers that I'd satisfied watching Lucy. No getting into another series for this old girl. Nuh uh. Cylon motivations? Not for me. Or so I thought. Wrong. No, this ep did the opposite of what I'd hoped. It blew me away. So much so that I can't even be mad I'll actually endure the layers upon layers of intrigue veteran BSG fans on the list will undoubtedly now freely engage in dissecting. Oh well. Might as well jump in. Let's get Lucyitis out the way. I luuuved seeing her in the teaser with other regulars. I luuuved that she had lots of good scenes. Odd that she's a villain of sorts in this context, 'cause I'm used to pulling for her. This time, I'm going, "Uh oh, she's getting suspicious. Watch out! She may be listening!" She did a great job (I think, as I'm not familiar with all the Cylon variations) of being "human" but not as "human" as Six and Sharon. I loved how she studied them, missing some of the meaning behind their shared glances, somehow sensing something a bit "off." And when they whacked her at the end, I notice her head was pretty hard. Took two blows. Ah, our girl never has "died" easily or forever, eh? Still, I was so glad I knew she'd be resurrected once again. Oddly, one of the best parts of the ep for me was what annoyed me in the past - -- the Invisible Whisperers In The Ear. But instead of just Blondie, we have Gaius haunting Blondie. (Tall girl, that one. Lucy must feel right at home.) So Gaius seems to be serving as a sort of a conscience and Quick Guide To How To Be More Human for Six. Great job of both actors conveying the process of emotions to thoughts and thoughts to emotions. I don't believe I've ever felt so much like I was watching how the human brain works -- mechanically and logically, but driven by emotion and ideals that form a "spirit" greater than the parts. Meanwhile, the real humans have to grapple with Hope ... um ... I mean Hera - -- the part Cylon, part Human newborn. (Interesting parallel with the rebirth process we see earlier with Six and Sharon.) Like Gabs, they decide to save Hera. (Boy, talk about setting the series up to go on forever, or have a spinoff. "Hera: Child of oil and blood. Can she fight the metal wihin her flesh?") Anyway, I'm thinking her adoptive mom is in for a few surprises and classes on how to be a parent to a child who wants to kill all its playmates. The Pres should've at least sent a note with new mom, to be opened in the event of extremely unusual behavior. Speaking of which, it appears the Pres didn't let Gaius in on the adoption thing. Only she, the Doc and the assistant know? Okay, here are some more questions for the BSG geeks. Are we to assume now that Six truly was a figment of Gaius' heart and imagination? His version of a Cylon "conscience," in terms of thinking as Six would? I'm not understanding the two Sharons among the humans. The first one thought she was human, loved the engineer and was killed awhile back? A second showed up, fell for the baby's daddy, shot the Commander (sorry, I'm really bad with characters' names) -- oh, Adama -- and people at first thought she was really the first Sharon? If S2 carried S1's experiences, did she try to rekindle things with the engineer? He rejected her? S1 is who we saw being "reborn" (Lucy at her side, heh heh) and being rebellious on Caprica? And she has no mind meld with S2 who had the baby? So S2 carries the humanness she got from "mama" S1, but now each has acquired experiences (a "life") apart from the other? I can't wait to see how Six and Sharon 'splain their new "specialness" to the other Cylons. Methinks the human voices in their heads may be making them a bit too naive. I'm not seeing the pop star idea floating too far among the metal folks or the humlons. D'anna's sure not going to forget that whack on the head when she gets resurrected. I see what Lucy meant about being the "perfect" Cylon. D'anna seems to feel she's truly the special one -- able to "pass" as human like Sharon -- even get into humans' heads -- but with the "superior" thought processes and lack of emotionalism of a Cylon. Oooo, she's gonna wanna put those cygrrrls into boxes all right. And Boomer (?). Poor guy doesn't know what to think. I can see why he'd be suspicious of two Cylons helping him escape. But that Starbuck tag they returned to him was an intriguing touch. Surely few true Cylons would've understood the sentimental value, as Sharon clearly did. Gaius was like Joxer to me at first. Now he seems like Joxer who's trying to think like Ares. Dangerous, very dangerous. If he's indeed carrying the the thoughts he believes Six No. 1 had, he could end up the enemy of the reformed Six 2. Was Six originally passing as human when she and Gaius first hooked up? Whew. Lots to chew on, and that's not even touching on the other "big" issues BSG fans find so fascinating. Yeah, yeah, I know Kym, Sue & company said we'd get hooked. Pfft. It's cold outside and I had nothing better to do. If I watch next week even though Lucy's not in it, it's because ... because .... Oh, what the heck. Fine. It's a really good show. There. I said it. Damn Lucy. Why couldn't she stick to comedy cameos. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
