According to him model railroaders worry about uniform track voltage being delivered to their locomotives and diesel engines. This provides smooth performance in their model trains. To check for uneven track performance an ohm meter is often used. Measurements are taken all around the track to discover problem areas. In the article my uncle cited one model railroader who took advantage of the electronic the programming feature on one of his engines to broadcast music from an I pod over the engine's speaker. The speaker usually designed to produce the sound effects of an engine running now became a miny mobile radio receiver. As the engine proceeds around the track it received signals from the IPod. Sections of track that experienced voltage problems showed up as degraded music as the engine proceeds over them. Much easier than systematically testing each piece of track with an ohm meter. That being said I kind of like the idea of trying an IPod to the track and letting a toy engine run over it. It's what Gomez Adams would have done. Or alternately I would have liked to see Gabrielle drool over over one while she's sick! Have you hugged your IPod today?
