He said that his idea was that it would be a kind of Simpson episode. And then he said that it just didn't work, that it should never have been a Xena ep. And as I said, I find it admirable for anyone to admit their mistakes. And for a Hollywood producer to--oh honey! Now one thing I did like about it was how it showed Gabrielle's residual fears about what Dahok and Hope did to her. Pregnancy is a really scary time--you have all kinds of fears about the baby. And after the horrific Hope, of course she was worried about what else might crawl out of her womb. And so it didn't surprise me that she would dream of having monsters. The neat thing about it was that Hope appeared as a lovely, innocent baby and was a monster. The physical monsters Gabrielle thought she had produced in Fishsticks were good souls in their hearts. That was a neat twist. But other than that--Hooooooooooo. A very ugly presentation of women in that ep. I don't care if they call it parody--it wasn't witty enough to be parody for me. So it really didn't work for me. But of course, being a Xena lite one, I wouldn't be likely to put it on my Best of list by any means. > I said: > >>> Oh, man... I'm praying that our local blockbuster will have the Battlestar set so I can catch up on the series. I want to know all about the show since Lucy will be such a big part of it. And good grief, what if she starts doing Battlestar con appearances? There goes another chunk of fun money spent on that woman. *sigh*. Miller" Subject: [chakram-refugees] British magazine "New Scientist" still knows the name of the tenth planet! This is from last week's issue. (Page 20, Feb. 4-10) _________________________________________________ The tenth planet AFTER all the angst over whether Xena is a planet, the icy world can now lay claim to be one - at least as much as Pluto, as it's bigger. Controversy has swirled around Xena, aka UB313, ever since its discovery was announced in 2005. It is roughly three times as far from the sun as Pluto. Assuming it was as reflective as Pluto, astronomers used its brightness and distance to estimate that it must be larger. To calculate Xena's size directly, Frank Bertoldi of the University of Bonn, Germany, and his team measured its light at a wavelength of 1.2 millimetres using a telescope array in the Spanish Sierra Nevada. Xena emits this radiation when warmed by the sun, regardless of how reflective its surface is. The measurements show Xena is about 3000 kilometres wide, 30 per cent larger than Pluto (Nature, vol 439, p 563). "Pluto is culturally known as a planet, so why not call this a planet too?" says Bertoldi. _______________________________________________________ Tired of spam? Yahoo! Often it was encouraging Xenastaff to try something new or go to the limits. Other times it was encouraging fans. I don't just mean having Missy Good do a couple of eps or Kym Taborn do interviews for DVDs. I'm thinking of the videos and other fan creations they incorporate and/or support in other ways. I realize there are other entities involved, like Creation, but I think Rob and Lucy set the tone. They seem to share a particular delight in helping people have such opportunities. I believe Sharon has played a critical role in that too, so I think it's fitting she got the chance to "step out" in this way. > And then I got a whole bunch of e-mails (some from total strangers!), > asking > "Boyfriend? Yep, I'd kinda wondered why I hadn't heard much about Mr. ROC. I was surprised when I heard about the baby, as well as a bit curious about reference to a "boyfriend." I wondered, "boyfriend" in the "really close bud" sense or "'boyfriend" in the "of *course* they're doing it off set" sense? Heh. Sounds like that may be left to conjecture, baby notwithstanding. Didn't Lucy suggest it could be hers? > > Suddenly one of the nurses says, "OH! I know who you look like-you look > like > that girl on Xena." Renee grunts out, "It. is. me." Only this time it was really Gabrielle. And we didn't have Xena to cut or pull the baby out. Nuh uh. Had to do it all ourselves. Well, with help from the mother." > Renee was so open, so vulnerable, so honest with us. I'd never thought about this before, but these cons can be like therapy sessions in a way. People being able to speak of emotional moments in front of a support group who wants only the best for you. There are other instances where maybe Xenastaff got to "practice" doing something, taking risks at cons, being able to verbalize something important. I'd like to think it was a mutually beneficial arena in that way. > > She looks healthy and very happy about the baby and as always, humbly > thanked > us for our support in all of her endeavors, in her professional life and > in her > works of charity. >> We've seen her "grow" to an extent more than Lucy in many ways, because of her younger age when the series began. And what if these cons keep going? Imagine both of them looking at the videos years later and being able to see how they changed over time. "That's when Mom wanted to be up on that stage as much as she likes doing dishes. That's when she really started having a ball. Ooo, in this one, I'd forgotten my bi-focals, so couldn't really see the notes Sharon was passing to me. Who's Sharon? See the little old lady in the front row? Looks good for 70, huh?" > -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
