I do feel lucky to have Chakram. My BSG friends are telling me about their wonderful chats, but I ain't interested. At least here, I know the BSG fans will mention something relevant -- i.e., related to Lucy's character. They know the kind of stuff we obsess about that might go beyond Lucy. Plus, might link into the XWP obsession that refuses to die. Anyway, I'm not looking forward to being hooked, but I'm glad I've evil folks on C-R to pull me through. (We won't tell them, though. It always happens to me that a little distance is a good thing for my memory. I'm always a few days (or more) behind reviewing and processing my most recent experiences. Yeah sure, I mindlessly engage in events as they occur and blurt things out as I actually go through an experience (My comment as I gazed at the plains of "Chin" that "WOW! New Zealand is ALMOST as pretty as Alaska!" and expecting that the New Zealanders with me would take this a marvelous compliment being a prime example.) But as do most of us I think, when I "watch my movie" later, I remember details that I didn't even know I'd taken in. And the experience becomes more enriched and more filled in. And probably becomes totally misremembered and changed in ways that I will never discover since I've now recorded over the original tape. Be that as it may, thinking about Lucy's singing (AND actually being able to translate a previously illegible word in my notebook) I have a few small additions on that. What I translated was that as they settled down to perform, Sharon apparently said something to Lucy and Lucy began to tease her, saying, "Oh, now she's making excuses!" (Though I didn't hear or she didn't say what the excuses were about.) And then when Sharon started strumming, Lucy said, "Sharon! Don't start in the wrong key! That's just rude!" (I think that's what she said.) I really enjoyed watching Sharon and Lucy performing together. Every time I looked at Sharon (okay, not a LOT of times, but then I'm so hopelessly smitten with Lucy-actually, I bet I glanced at Sharon when Lucy would look at her and smile, which was quite often), Sharon was playing with a very serious and kind of determined look on her face. She appeared totally absorbed in the music. Or maybe just totally absorbed with trying not to screw up. (Grin.) You know, I feel REALLY strange writing about Sharon, just because I know Sharon is on some of these lists and she might actually read this. I can blithely say what I think I saw/heard/translated about all the others because hell, they'll never read it. But Sharon-she just might. What an odd feeling. . . Lucy was both involved in the song, in the feelings she was sharing with us, but also she was aware of us watching her and being her audience. So she'd joke a bit-like when she imitated the sound of a slide guitar every so often. Since as she said at the beginning, there was just her and Sharon, just her voice and Sharon's guitar. And sometimes she'd look at Sharon and just beam as Sharon played the accompaniment, just really enjoying herself. It seemed to me that Lucy was grooving on performing with a buddy. Anyway, like most things at the con, it was a very down-home and very hmmm, inclusive experience. Here was Lucy singing to us and having her friend Sharon provide the simple music for the song. It really reminded me of when Kevin Smith and Joel Tolbeck who were in a band together in New Zealand would play rock and roll for us. Adam (I think Adam-the dark-haired guy) from Creation would always accompany them on electric guitar and they also had a drummer. If Danielle was at the con, she'd be the rocker chick singing for them. And it always felt like a garage band playing for friends. A great deal of fun being had by the band who were playing mostly for their own pleasure and the pleasure of their "gang". And enjoying that milieu very much. So the connection between the performers and the audience was on a more equal footing. Not withdrawn, reserved or like "We're doing this only because you pay to see us do this." But, "We're doing this to entertain and have fun with our friends." It was always more inclusive, open and more of a shared event. With of course, the "cool kids" on the stage and their happy minions in the audience. To me I felt that we all could say, "I'm with the band" and it would be true. And this little mini concert from Lucy and Sharon gave me that same feeling. So anyway that was another special thing about Lucy's performance. How much fun she and Sharon had doing it and how much care they took to make it good for us. Sharon is a really good guitar player. Lots of folks were talking about how good she was at the con. (SHARON-don't read this-it's embarrassing me to look like a fawning fan!) And Sharon just beamed also at the end. She appeared to have had a rip-roaring good time also. Like Lucy. And certainly like us. AND, since it was a song about grasping the chance for love when "a very exciting girl" passes by who's just right for you and who may never pass this way again, so grab her!, why how long do you think it will take before the first fan video of XWP scenes cut to this song sung in "Xena's" voice suddenly appears on some fan site? With the message directed at both Xena and the little blond kid. Hmmmmm? Before the DVD comes out or you reckon the bootleg version will be used? I'm betting there's probably already one out there. Which will probably formally surface as soon as the DVDs are released. Grin. Okay, next bit of "housekeeping". A few people filled in a few cracks in my report for me. When I said that somebody asked Renee why she'd gone to Israel, it wasn't a fan at the con as I'd thought from my notes. It was actually the guys at Israeli Customs and Immigration who asked that. And Renee's answer, "Because I wanted to learn about the country." apparently triggered off some concern among them. So they detained her for questioning. "Go line up with those other terrorists over there." (No, Renee didn't say that--I just made that up.) My note about, "Where'd you go with whom" was therefore literally correct and not just a fragment of a reminder of something else. And Renee did say, "I thought I was getting all the answers wrong. I was sweating!" And Natalie did rip out an "Oh god!" and maybe something along the lines of "Why did you say that!?" Now that I remember what it was about, it's a funny story! And, final housekeeping bit. Renee's boyfriend announcement. I talked about how some of the people there told me that "When Renee mentioned a boyfriend, everybody went absolutely still for a moment. And then there was this kind of sighing breath being let go. And then, 'Okay', let's go on from there'." And I couldn't figure out why this was a surprise since we "all" knew that Renee was pregnant since before Christmas when she announced it on the fan club list. (Which information was immediately bandied about to other lists of course). And then I got a whole bunch of e-mails (some from total strangers!), asking "Boyfriend? Where's Steve?" And THEN I thought to myself, "D'OH! Ain't I the one who keeps endlessly reminding people that there are a HUGE number of fans who go to the con who are not online at all?" (The answer is "Yes. Yes I am.") And I also got e-mails from friends who reminded me of how the news about Renee and Steve came out and why many fans might not be aware of it. What a buffoon I am! So for those people who are asking, this is what some of us heard online. (Boy, I feel almost slimy doing this. But since Renee is obviously "out" about where she "got the baby", I guess it's better to say what little bit has been officially shared with us. Believe me, I don't know nothing special. I am so NOT in the in crowd. Grin.) So. About hmmm, well, sometime last year, maybe in the summer, Josh Becker (Xena director, writer and member of Rob and Sam's "Detroit Mafia") was talking on his site about, well, I THINK it was a conversation about a story he was writing or maybe he was just talking about divorce. I don't know-I don't usually read his site. And someone wrote in apparently saying that divorce is not all that usual. Josh replied that on the contrary, most of the people he knows have been through a divorce. And he began to list his friends who had been divorced. And on his list were the names "Lucy" and "Renee" among others. Some eagle-eyed fan spotted it and immediately ran to some of the lists to talk about it. There was a short spate of posts on it, with people shooting over to Josh's site (which was suddenly edited with that information being dropped off which started little fights among the fans who had seen it and those who couldn't find it, laugh!) Sharon then sent a note from Renee to those lists that were discussing it. Renee's note asked the fans to respect her and Steve's privacy. And happily most lists immediately shut down the discussion. And that was the last we heard on that from any official source. So that's why for some of us it was not such a great surprise that Renee's pregnancy is due to a new boyfriend. (Although those "Renee and Katherine Fugate are now a couple" fans HAD been hoping it was due to a turkey baster. And I have to admit, I was involved in some joking with friends about Katherine's studly Callisto like abilities-"Callisto didn't need no stinkin' turkey baster either! Go Katherine, go Katherine!". Regretful sighs indeed.) I am suddenly reminded of a con where Claire and Danielle did a bit on being professors studying up on Xena. And they showed a slide of Gabrielle and said that they had found a picture of her parents. And the next slide was of Ellen DeGeneris and Ann Heche. (Who were still pre-divorce then.) And MAN, did it look like Gabrielle really could be their daughter-right down to the hairstyle. So that's the story. I just had a Stupid Fan Tricks moment when I didn't realize that most people were NOT aware that Renee and Steve had split. And so of course her talking about her "boyfriend" was a real shock for most folks there. D'OH! Anyway, hope this clears this up. Because that's all I know about Renee's honey situation. Grin. Okay! Back to the 06 con and little miss "HEY-LOOKA MY BELLY!" I think someone asked if she'd auditioned for anything lately. "I don't audition. I was so discouraged by the things I was auditioning for. You have to want 100% to be there all the time." Then I have the cryptic phrase, "Lot's of things." And then, "You have to earn what you get." (Editorial note: I LIKE that line.) Someone asked her if she'd seen the video on the Creation official fan club page of Lucy being told by Sharon that Renee had recorded an audio announcement to fans telling us she is pregnant. The questioner didn't describe it, but I will here for people who didn't see it. Lucy's response was to just grin all over her face and gush about how great this is and that Renee is so happy and that they are all so happy for her. And then she said that she herself was especially thrilled because she thought this was a great idea-that Renee would birth the babies and then give them to Lucy to raise. So that Lucy could have the joy of having more children without having to go through the travails of childbirth. Renee said she hadn't seen the video and so knew nothing about it. But she immediately asked with dark suspicion, "She wants my child, right?" And then growled out, "You haven't earned my child Lucy!" Then Renee said she wanted to share a letter she wrote for Miles about his birth. She said, "I call this, 'The Gift of Miles'" She explained to us, "Before he was born, I was really into natural child birth. Steve and I went to 10 weeks of child birth training so I'd be ready for it." I didn't quite get the name, but it was something like the "Bradley method of child birthing." She repeated that she had written this piece for Miles, "It's a hello to him." She said that one night she woke up in labor and told Steve about it. And he asked her the appropriate questions-"How far apart are the contractions? How strong are they?" etc. They decided that it was just the beginning and that they should hang at home for a while. Now Renee had a whole timeline for how her own personal "Labor Day" progressed which I didn't write down unfortunately. So she'd say like, "5:00 a.m. I wake Steve up again." "7:00 a.m. I woke Steve up again." Actually I don't have a lot of this written down. Renee was so hilarious telling this. And she definitely acted out the scenarios she was describing. I've always thought comedy was Renee's forte. And I just got totally caught up in watching her while laughing hysterically. I am SO happy to hear that this bit will be on the con DVD because it was just so funny. In fact, if you think you're going to buy the con DVD I would suggest you might not want to read the rest of this report. Because it would be MUCH funnier to watch Renee do this piece than to read about it. Okay, so, hmmm, does Renee doze off during the early stages or just Steve? Not sure. But anyway, the contractions are getting somewhat closer and somewhat harder but Steve reminds her that their training in the Bradley method says that she's still got a long way to go. She accepts this. Steve dozes off again. She keeps waking him up, thinking surely it's time to go to the hospital. He is very calmly talking to her, timing the contractions for her, asking her about the quantity and intensity and reminding her about the level of events they needed to reach which they learned in the Bradley method would indicate that they should go to the hospital. And she hasn't reached it yet and that they will probably just send her home again if they go. So she should just relax and go back to sleep. Renee is no longer quite so calm. She begins to get a little testy in the face of Steve's easy-going reminders about their training and the signs they're looking for. She wakes him up and says again, "I NEED to go to the hospital." He again calmly reassures her she doesn't. This goes on for a bit and finally the next time they reenact their little scene and he quietly says, "The Bradley method says you're not ready yet to go to the hospital", Renee screams back, "FUCK THE BRADLEY METHOD! TAKE ME TO THE HOSPITAL. *NOW*!" Steve replies, "Okay. You look ready." They get in the car. Renee told us she was really in pain. Moving hurts. Riding in the car hurts. The road is bad. She doesn't want Steve to drive during her contractions. She is grateful when they hit a red light so that she doesn't have to move. At one point she screams at Steve, "I can SEE the light is green. But DON'T START!" They finally get to the hospital. Where she finds out she is only three centimeters dilated. "They said I should have stayed at home!" she wails. Okay, so they tell her to walk around, that this helps labor progress. So she and Steve go take a tour of the nursery. Renee mimes walking around kind of hunched over, suddenly stopping shock still, holding onto her belly and grimacing and panting her way through the pain of the contractions. As they tour the nursery. Suddenly one of the nurses says, "OH! I know who you look like-you look like that girl on Xena." Renee grunts out, "It. is. me." I THINK she said that at first the nurse didn't believe her. But finally she convinces them it is her and then the nurse said in surprise, "I didn't recognize you!" Renee: "Go figure." And the nurse says, "I LOVE that show! Oh-I'm gonna go tell the girls!" Renee: "NOOOOOOOO!" Renee talked about reassuring herself that women have been having babies through natural childbirth for thousands of years. "I imagine my body opening. But my body is screaming, 'GIVE ME THE DRUGS!'" Hey! Here's a bit of the timeline! "10 a.m. And 7 centimeters". (Editorial note-10 centimeters is when you're allowed to start pushing I believe.) I believe that Renee said something about either thinking about or kind of daydreaming that she saw some market doors that she'd seen in Egypt. With a guard guarding them. And here she is in California. "1 pm. Fully dilated, ready to push. The doctor comes in. My legs are spread wide open. And the nurse tells the doctor, 'This is that actress on TV.' And the doctor says, 'I didn't recognize you!'" (Now, I'm not sure if this is right-surely Renee had met her doctor before. But it's what I have written down.) "Three hours of pushing. What if I can't get Miles out? He'll have to spend the rest of his life in there!" Renee said that as she labored, she kept hearing the whispers from the nurses passing by. "Xena whisper whisper, Xena whisper." So she's been pushing for hours, she's totally spread eagled on her back ready to pop, and she hears "Xena whisper whisper" again and this young nurse comes in the door-takes one look and backs right out again without a word. "I expect she never watched the show in the same way again." Well of course, Miles eventually gained his freedom. Renee ended with a message to him. "My love is greater than my whole existence." And that was the end of Renee's con appearance. This was a very different con appearance for Renee. A long time ago, like maybe in 1997 or so (Good gods-that's NINE years ago!), Renee had done one tour of cons. Which I think was two or three appearances on the East Coast and environs. And after those, she didn't do anymore for a few years. She kind of "came in from the cold" in 2001, the year the show was ending. When she started doing cons again she usually appeared with Lucy. Those few rare times when Lucy wasn't on the schedule to share the stage with her, she did short performances (at first with others-with Michael Hurst once and I think maybe she did the same piece, "Love Letters" with Tim somewhere?) and then she did that one woman show where she performed in a series of short vignettes. (Which was excellent by the way.) And when she did the performances she generally didn't do much question and answer time with the fans. At the completion of her one woman show, she talked about learning from her acting coach that as an actor, she had to be brave enough to expose her self. To open herself up for others to look inside. That this was the essence of acting. Well it appears that Renee has taken this to heart. Personally I well, of course I enjoyed the birthing story. It was hilarious. But I also "accepted" that Renee wanted to share some of her spiritual uh, not sure that "growth" is the right word but perhaps just her journey, where her mind and soul (and fecund ovaries) are taking her at this stage of her life. I like that the actors and crew keep looking for new things to do for us at the cons. I mean, heck, the shows been over for almost five years now. How many times can you want to hear the answer to, "Did you play any practical jokes on each other?" And the endlessly fascinating to some fans, "What's it like to kiss Lucy Lawless?" (And how come nobody ever asks the boys that, huh? Nobody ever asked Kevin (Ares), Ted (Joxer), Michael (Iolaus), Jay (Draco), or Bobby (Marcus) that. For gods sake, you'd think somebody would ask Rob. He's gotta be the kid with the most experience on that score! (He'd BETTER be, anyway.) Heck, I've even seen him kiss XENA on those behind the scene DVDs!) But I'm easy that way, I guess you could say. When Danielle screams out her songs to us in a wildy raucous voice, when Tim does his poor man's (sic) Frank Sinatra imitation of a lounge lizard for us, when Allison Wall performs selections from her very odd avant-guarde one woman play about a turtle living in a cathedral was it? hey, that's fine with me. As when Renee showed us clips from Diamonds and Guns in Seattle, I just pay attention and sit patiently in my seat and let the awareness that if it wasn't them and if we weren't the obsessed-with- the-show-slobs we are, we might not appreciate these events so much. As I've said before, while watching these guys on stage, I often get the feeling that we're like the parents at a school show in the gym. We're ready to be entertained and we're gonna enjoy what they give us, by the gods. Well, at least I do. Renee was so open, so vulnerable, so honest with us. This is such a complete turnaround for her from her early days on the show when it appeared that she was not very comfortable with the celebrity aspect of being a TV show actor. I'm very glad she feels more comfortable around us and is willing to share some of her personal story with us. My heart hurt to hear that she'd been the victim of abuse. But I'm very glad that she refuses to be victimized by that, that now she's talking about it and accepting it as part of her past that she has overcome. And I'm very happy that she's so open about it for the sake of other abused people. She looks healthy and very happy about the baby and as always, humbly thanked us for our support in all of her endeavors, in her professional life and in her works of charity. Okay-that's my final section on Renee expanded (so to speak) from the original short report I sent earlier. Now let's all hope for her sake that after she has the baby and is no longer pregnant and so has her mind back, she doesn't suddenly stop short one day and say, "OH MY GOD! I READ PARTS OF MY JOURNAL ON STAGE!!!!!" Or even, "Oh GOD! I showed them my naked self portraits!" Next year might really be fun! And one little bit of advice for Renee. If she wants to earn money to complete "Diamonds and Guns", in addition to putting up those self-portraits on e-bay, she should also make copies of the nude photograph of herself that her boyfriend took for her to paint from-and put them up on e-bay too. I bet she'd be able to not only complete D&G, she'd probably have enough money left over to support her and her babies in style for many years to come. I was going to write up Steve Sears next since I always enjoy his appearances a lot, but a friend has told me she is DYING to hear about Hudson's appearance. So -Hudson it shall be. Joel and Kevin had guitars, I think. The drummer -- dunno -- maybe another Creation employee? > If Danielle was at the con, she'd be > the rocker chick singing for them. Renee did "Love Letters" with Michael Hurst in L.A. and with Tim at Cherry Hill, both in 2002 as I recall.
