"In the movie 'The Message' there is some interesting dialogue as Mohammed's companions discuss which instrument to use to call believers to prayer. The horn was already being used by Jews. Drums were cast aside as being too martial in nature. The human voice is therefore chosen. Interestingly, the human voice counts as a stringed instrument as it vibrates in much the same manner as strings." ...it is not clear whether "the human voice counts as a stringed instrument as it vibrates in much the same manner as strings" is her own observation or the reasoning expressed in the movie. From what I've seen of richan, I would suspect it's the latter, because the method of human voice production is parallel to that of a horn. It \is/ a ''wind instrument". The sound from a string instrument is produced by strings being struck, plucked, or stroked. That of a wind instrument (with or without a reed) comes from the vibration of the column of air within the instrument. In the human voice, that's the mouth and nasal cavities (plus a bit from the upper part of the throat and the sinuses). TEXena the pickypicky whose overwhelmingly 'favoritest' instruments are the harp and the human voice ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. In the human voice, that's the mouth and nasal cavities (plus a bit from the upper part of the throat and the sinuses). Bowed instuments most closely resemble the human voice. The following are examples: the west is represented by the cello, India the sarangi, and China the Dalei. These instruments have resonating chambers that duplicate the throat, nasal cavities, and sinus cavities of humans. The strings duplicate the vibration of the human vocal chords. I'll have to admit that sometimes human vocal chords are classified as a double reed instrument. Still since vocal chords can vary in tension like strings I think that they are better classified as stringed instuments. My only question is does Gabrielle baying at the moon in "Life Blood" count as "music of the night?" On the human voice see: http://www.sirinet.net/~jgjohnso/music.html and http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/music/vocres.html#c1 ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I'd have to say that humans have an 'innate' desire to be part of a 'group'. That group having rituals and 'comradery' that fulfills a basic need (not unlike Chakram ) the "tribe" or "clan" has been a definition of 'self' for at least 50,000 years or more. I'd say that we might have an "association" gene. Lee Daley leedaley@optonline.net ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Plato would have been pleased. the "Dialogue" here is phenomenal. A year on this list when it is active, is certainly equivalent to a term at any college. It's actually more challenging, given my own 'University Experience'. Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year All!
