Heck, I wasn't being charitable. :) Fact is, throughout the series, Gabs was Xena's most constant companion - no point in denying it. So 'Gabrielle' was the obvious suggestion. Since you raise it, 'Ares' is probably the only classically acceptable astronomical name of all those - but I expect there's an Ares somewhere already, there's certainly a Mars. And a Callisto, of course. > That's a long way from how some of us (including me) saw it in the > beginning -- Xena as the lone warrior, with Gabs as a questionably > "necessary" nuisance. But I think I had better just note it and pass on - obviously others disagree with me over that, but any debate about it is likely to become rather heated. And undecidable, since it's a matter of personal taste. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I can't speak for everyone in the U.S., but as a kid in the public (and private) school system, my teachers didn't really teach history and literature so much as they illustrated, referenced, discussed, and tested. Dry, bland, boring. I can *really* remember Beowulf being absolute *torture*. But after seeing it dramatized on Xena? Whoa! And I got a ton of American history in my schooling, but I had zero point of reference for anything European. Europe may as well have been on Pluto. European history was highlighted and summarized, and I never, ever, ever learned cool things like the rebellion of Boudicca. Again - saw *that* on Xena and was blown away. Xena spurred me into personally learning a number of subjects that I despised in high school: Greek and Roman mythology, ancient and classical history, WWII history, world literature. These are subjects that I love to this day and that have enriched me beyond explanation, and that has caused me to pass on the knowledge with the same level of adoration with which I first learned, and even consider becoming a teacher. >The article mentions >the Zemeckis Beowulf and also says "there are no fewer than four >projects in development based on Boudica." I can't find anything >about these "projects" on IMDB yet. > >Boeotian One of them is Mel Gibson. He's done well in the past with this theme, so the results could be good. I believe his is tentatively titled "Warrior". There's another, called "Warrior Queen", I believe penned by Pulitzer winner David Auburn who did "Proof". I believe Steven Spielberg is working on one - "Queen Fury", I think, and there's a fourth one called "My Country". I look for Spielberg and Gibson to emerge as front runners. Both are strong filmmakers with good track records. The only difference is that Mel will probably be financing his movie mostly out of his pocket, and Spielberg's sources are probably going to be mostly external. Not to mention that he'll have ILM and could tap Lucas as a contributor, and Lucas has been wanting to do non-Star Wars things for a while. This article http://www.leedstoday.net/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=39&ArticleID=1208767 says that the Legio Secunda Augusta just went to Romania to film a Boudicca movie. Whichever one ends up the front runner with both Boudicca and Beowulf, I'm definitely in the theater on opening night. S. p.s. To me this planet will always be either "Xena" or "The Planet Formerly Known as Xena." And her moon will always be "Gabrielle" or "The Moon Formerly Known as Gabrielle." I assume others will join me in this? Maybe even some astronomers and astro-physicists? Maybe even the news media? Feel free to spread this around. XWPacolyte Cupid and Psyche...
