You're right! "Send In the Clones"! And here you thought you were being cheeky. :P I see that "Lost" barely beat out our beloved WP. *brow* Senseless! Well, SciFi stretches a long way, though where it stops and fantasy starts is a very indefinite boundary. As someone pointed out, Clones is almost classic Sci-Fi (though Xena's powers which she still keeps are fantasy, I guess). I guess most of Xena and Herc is actually fantasy (rather than sci-fi). Time travel (which keeps happening by implication in XWP) is a classic sci-fi theme but I guess can be encompassed by fantasy too. I'm just trying to think if there are any other themes which are typical sci-fi and _not_ typical fantasy. May be hard to do, since I rather think fantasy, almost by definition, could include anything sci-fi could do (though not the other way around). Nigel in You Are There is kinda sci-fi-ish, I guess. (I was just trying to think if there are any bits of Farscape, a sci-fi series, which are actually fantasy. Some of the episodes involving the Scorpius clone in Crichton's head come pretty close to fantasy, though since there is a 'rational' explanation - it's Crichton's mind doing the fantasising - it doesn't violate sci-fi, IMO.) cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. This write-up will actually tell you less than something you would read in the paper, BUT, because some people REALLY don't wanna know anything, I've still included the spoiler space. So, before I put the space, info that is safe to read for all: Rating: A Fan or non-viewer enjoyment: Both S P O I L E R S P A C E SERENITY Starring: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Summer Glau, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Ron Glass and Chiwetel Ejiofor Directed by: Joss Whedon Written by: Joss Whedon Composed by: David Newman Edited by: Lisa Lassek Rating: A If youre a fan of Firefly, you have to see Serenity. If you are not a fan of Firefly, or if youve never heard of it, you have to see Serenity. Ive never been a big Joss Whedon fan. I found Buffy a boring show in comparison to my favourite series Xena and I would only watch it the characters of Faith or Dawn were on. I dont know what it is, but I was really drawn to the ideas behind the characters. Their concept was interesting, and, despite my lack of interest in the show, I was drawn to the characters and I needed to know what would happen to them. When Firefly came out, I really had no interest in watching it. The only thing that made me turn it on was that Gina Torres was starring the show, and Im a big fan of Torres. Yet, it wasnt her character, Zok, that made me watch; it was Summer Glau as the young and crazy, River. River was the character that made me watch the show and was, really, the only thing that I found interesting. What had been done to her? Why did the Alliance want her back so bad? Why was this brilliant girl suddenly driven nearly completely mad? Serenity begins with a very short and quick lead in for the non-Firefly viewers to set up the movie. Thankfully, its brief, as fans of a series turned movie are quickly bored if a long explanation is needed to fill in the non-viewers. Frankly, the movie tells a new viewer very little, but, its really all they need. Firefly was cancelled with many questions unanswered, and Serenity answers two of the biggest (but I wont tell you what they are). Whedon really stepped up with Serenity, where characters whom I had no interest in in the series, I suddenly cared a lot about, which set me up to care for what would befall the Serenity crew. The thing I enjoyed most about Serenity, is it went everywhere I wanted Firefly to go. I dont know if the limited two hours caused the big guns to be pulled, but I am grateful for it, for I much prefer the movie to the series. All the actors excelled in the movie, with performances to match what theyve done in the series. Glau always overshadows the others, simply because shes got the wackiest character to portray which gives her more to work with and more freedom to do. I have to ask, why havent we seen more of this young actor on our screens, because she is being seriously overlooked! Torres is also given more to do as Zok besides shooting guns and glowering. Zok has always been a very stoic character, but Torres got a real chance to show her talent in this film. The script is delightfully hilarious. The entire theatre was roaring with laughter one moment, but then gasping in surprise the next, as a comical scene instantly turned tragic. You dont get to rest in this movie. Though usually not a fan of his writing, I have always appreciated Whedons directing ability, and, with his growth as a writer in this movie, it only enhanced his directing (and a bigger budget didnt hurt). Then theres the ass kicking chicks. All the ladies get a piece of the action in this movie, and if youre expecting the warrior character, Zok, to be doing the most damaged, then youve forgotten some of what was hinted at about Rivers character in the series. All I can say is, Buffy, eat your heart out and run, cause River gonna take you down! An all around wonderful film, with all the action, comedy, drama, thrills and tragedy you could ask for, Serenity does set itself up for a second movie, but, I will warn you only with this, the crew of Serenity will never be the same. (I have a slight excuse - the cast does include one XWP alumnus, Michelle Ang, and these lists seem to be fairly relaxed these days about the activities of ex-Xena people) I was just asked by a Xena acquaintance if I could help publicise her friend Mark's film. This is the one you may have heard of funded by Internet donations. The only Xena connection I can see is Michelle Ang, who we all know and love (or not :) as Akemi.... what the heck, she's a fine actress IMO. Anyway, the plot sounds like it could be interesting... any of you in Wellington, here's your chance to support New Zealand culture (which as we all know, stops at the Bombay Hills.
