I can remember expressing similar sentiments with my parents. In the past, "generational" differences could span 20 years. Things can change so fast now, that kids five years apart can have very different experiences when it comes to, say, technology. Imagine one who remembers Walkmans vs. one who's only seen iPods. I'll never forget being in the library (remember those?) and seeing a little girl standing with her hand on her hip, waiting for her pencil to get sharpened. She'd stuck it in the hole of the sharpener, but nothing happened. Finally she huffily told the librarian, "It's broken." The librarian told her she'd have to turn the handle. > > >How come? I felt Alti's only appeal was the spiritual power Xena hoped to acquire. I didn't see Xena as any different because of Alti, so much as having an excuse to proclaim herself destined to be the Destroyer of Nations. She seemed bored with Borias before that and ready to conquer everything in sight. Alti simply gave her a push down a path she was already on, which she'd chosen in large part because of Caesar and Ares -- both of whom she was attracted to on more levels than she experienced with Alti. > >I agree that Alti was a wonderful addition as a nemesis for Xena. Look at the part (as I said) that Alti played in Xena's > past. There was plenty of psychological stuff going on there, from my > view.>> Like what? She did manipulate Xena's responses toward Borias and that "friend" she foisted on Xena. She made Xena choose between her powers and Cyane. Much later, Xena finds out that Alti cursed Solan. I just didn't see that Xena ever had any emotional ties to Alti, beyond the practical benefits she could get from Alti and augmenting her need to learn and for power. I believe she truly was seduced by Ares and Caesar on much deeper levels -- passion, purpose (albeit misguided), excitement, a "kindred spirit" of sorts to be behind/with her in her conquering -- not just a means to an end. > > I just found Alti way more interesting than Lao Ma, for example, or Caesar. > > In fact I found Caesar similar to your description of Alti - just an > unpleasant fly waiting to be squashed. > > That's just the way it strikes me. >> Mind you, I'm looking at it from Xena's perspective -- her interactions with and responses to them. The fact that she was drawn to them for some reasons, yet turned away for others. That *she* found them interesting. I don't think she found Alti interesting except for "How'd you do that?" Later on, with Caesar, her reaction to him was complicated by Gabrielle's reactions as a friend and Amazon queen. I wasn't looking at them so much as characters in themselves, but in terms of the emotional complexity it provoked from Xena/Lucy. I was mainly responding to what you said about Lucy's comment that strong villains like Callisto only made the hero appear stronger. My piggyback was that I thought some villains helped the hero define/redefine herself, as well as provoked greater breadth/depth in Lucy's performances. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I am really SCARED that so many people do not know about this. The Chronicles of Narnia is a seven book fantasy series written by CS. Lewis. I am sure I will get the date wrong, but I believe they were written in the 50s. Most people tend to read them around grade 6 or 7 (I read them in grade 5 myself). They are just WONDERFULLY magical books with great characters and stories and everyone should read this series. Thank you!! I've been meaning to respond to Ife on this, but I've been on the road and haven't had the time. *waves from Toronto* CS Lewis was a contemporary (and close friend) of JRR Tolkien. The Chronicles of Narnia and LOTR each gain something from being read with this in mind, I've found. Narnia is much more dear to me personally than Middle-Earth. For this reason, I am *really* nervous about this film ... but I have faith that Peter Jackson has set the bar so high for films of this nature (not to mention, a lot of the same people are working on it behind the scenes) that my fears will prove unfounded. > Of the 7 books, three I believe (it's been a LONG time) were made into a television series by a British station back in the 80s. Great for kids, but adults will shudder. ;) Yes, the BBC made at least the first three (_The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe_, _Prince Caspian_ and _The Voyage of the Dawn Treader_) into painful telemovies. Tom Baker (my favorite Doctor Who) even played Puddleglum, but that wasn't enough to save them in my book. > Only now, FINALLY is the series being brought to life for the big screen. "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" was the first book written in the series (though it actually comes second after "The Magician's Nephew" if you want to go chronologically). OK, here I'm going to try not to rant too much. The editors at Harper-Collins USA, who somehow decided that it would be a good idea to reorder the series so it's chronological rather than in the order in which they were written and originally published, need to be banished to a particularly evil circle of Hell for all eternity. The books *must* be read in the original order, which goes like this: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe Prince Caspian The Voyage of the Dawn Treader The Silver Chair The Horse and his Boy The Magician's Nephew The Last Battle If you read them in chronological order (i.e. with _The Magician's Nephew_ coming first) you're going to have no clue what's going on, and the entire experience of Narnia is going to be ruined for you. Narnia *must* be experienced for the first time by following Lucy into the wardrobe and out the other side. That's the only acceptable way. So, Ife, your homework is to pick up the series, re-order the box they came in as above, and start reading. The books are short (they are, after all, aimed for a young audience), but they are oh so wonderfully good. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Hi, I've had to watch Canadian TV all week, so I'm not sure if this has premiered in the US yet -- but is everyone aware of the summertime series on FOX called _Empire_? I think it started last Tuesday ... at least, it did up here. It's a series about the period in Roman history immediately following Julius Caesar's assassination. (Yeah, I know, I can't quite believe this is on American network tv either.) I missed the first half of the first episode, so I'm not entirely sure who's playing whom, but I did recognize Audrey Heller's dumbass late husband Paul (any other _24_ watchers out there?) as the character who could only have been Brutus. This seems like a good one for Xenites to follow this summer ... just making sure everyone's aware. It's on FOX in the States, and IIRC I saw it on CTV here in Canada. It's on Tuesdays at 10pm Eastern.
