This is actually the best part of the cons (except the Lucy and Renee parts). You meet new people whom you never would have gotten to know. It broadens one's horizons and I look forward to meeting up with these people again. For example I have become an honory auntie to the baby with two mommies, since I have no siblings I am quite proud of my designation even if I never meet the two mommies again. > > Cheryl had told her friend Ed that she was pretty shy and that he would > probably have to encourage her to go up to Lucy. I grew next to the railroad tracks and raised by a mother whose father operated a jackhammer and therefore I have tendency to be loud which is enhanced by imbidding in alcohol. Now despite the impression given by KT, I am not a souse, but the wine was free and it would have been impolite to turn it down and my mother raised me to have good manners. > > But Cheryl was adamant. This has to be the most embarrassing moment of my life. I have not only hauled my friend around by her shirt tails and delivered her to Lucy Lawless like naughty kitten, I then failed in my mission to get the picture (bad wine). I was however very pleased that some one got the picture. I hope that KT got a copy if not I have it now and it will be in my scrape book soon. > You know, I wasn't sure how I would react to meeting Lucy. As far as I know I didn't drool and obviously I wasn't speechless. It was however wonderful to meet her and to see for myself what a patient and kind person Lucy is. She was grace personified. I will always rememeber the last words she said to me: she said "I'm going home and eat pie." Beneath all the glamour and fame is a nice woman who likes pie and I'm proud to be her fan. Lucy works very well off certain strong characters/actors, like Ares/Kevin, Draco/Jay, Lao Ma/Kim or Boediccea (?)/Hurst's wife. They seem to give her something more to play off of, which I think she really appreciated about Hudson. You could see sparks even when nothing was being said. Also, each one of those brought out a different aspect of Xena's conflicted heroism, especially in reminding her of her past. With weaker characters, like Cortes, she could be straight out Xena, with few of the psychological tweaks we'd get with, say, Ares or Cally. I think TPTB did a great job with some of the casting as well as the writing, in that regard. > Lucy and Renee also commented a couple of times on what a great role > Callisto > was to play, and how Hudson made the most of it.>> Yep. I watched "Seeds of Faith" recently -- not one of my favs. I thought Tim O. did a fantastic job with the scenes involving Cally and his realization that he must die. There are so many bits where I wonder if the actor will ever get as good a role and opportunity to shine as she/he had on Xena. I watch "Cold Case" with Kathryn Morris and still believe she got to show more in a couple of eps as Njara, than she does in her own series. I remember something Ares said to her way back in "Ties That Bind," when he pretended to be her father. He told her not to be ashamed of what she'd done, that "it made you the woman you are today." Obviously he hoped she'd return to that, but it was also true about the good part of who she'd become. > > I also liked ROC's portrayal as an embittered Gabrielle and the the > shock on Xena's face when she saw that. > Oh, yes. It was so strange seeing Gabrielle without her usual "light." I'm conscious of all the different roles Lucy got to play (e.g., Xena's lookalikes, Evil Xena, Callisto, amnesiac Xena), but Hope wasn't the only variation ROC played. She also did that bit in "Intimate Strangers" where Gabs was really Callisto in Xena's nightmare. ROC's portrayals in those instances gave me the chills -- and I wasn't much of a Gabs fan back then. I have so much respect now for ROC's talent and contributions to making the show a success. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I've just checked - and of course TJ also shot 'Callisto', the first Callisto ep. I hadn't realised that either, though it's kinda obvious in retrospect. That famous shot where Xena is 'framed' in the chakram and the camera pulls back to show Callisto holding it is typical TJ. > > Interesting insight from Lucy - Renee commented that it was strange > > introducing such a strong character as Callisto, who might take the > > attention > > away from the hero. Not that this is Xena-related, it's Herc-related, but I was just having a discussion on some list about Gina Torres' role in the Joss Whedon movie 'Serenity' (which is the movie sequel to the short-lived 'Firefly' series). And, having seen Gina as Nebula on Herc, as Hel on Cleo 2525, as Zoe in Firefly, and briefly guesting as a villain on Alias, I have to say that Nebula was by far the best role she had (IMO). Even though Zoe in 'Firefly' was second-in-command and should have had a leading role, in my opinion she was woefully under-used - and, the way the role was written, it had far less depth than Nebula (or Hel, for that matter). I mention this because it's a direct parallel to your comment on Kathryn Morris. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. And to my amusement, the executive producers on Alias are none other than the much-maligned Orci and Kurtzmann. So there you are. Umm, actually, I just Googled to check if they actually are exec. prods. - and they are - and Google also, to my surprise, told me that this fact had been mentioned a while back on _this_ list by none other than Meredith!! But in those days I hadn't seen Alias, I think, certainly O&K's connection hadn't registered with me. Which just shows two things - 1. My memory is not omniscient, omnivorous and infallible 2. Anything you say on the Net is liable to live forever in the depths of Google - so be warned!! Now I do have to say that, much as I like Alias, it doesn't grab me quite the way Xena did. Lots of dramatic things happen on it, I think there's more action (and their continuity with the complex plotlines is way better than XWP's) but maybe things are happening too fast. And, though I like Jennifer Garner, she ain't Lucy. I don't know, what does XWP have that all these other shows don't? I recently saw one of the scripts credited to Robert Orci as a singleton. I think the pair are involved in an upcoming feature film, although I can't recall which one. According to IMDB, they appear to have written the script Mission Impossible 3, and that may be the one I was thinking of. During their stint on Alias, I noticed that Alex Kurtzmann went to Alex Kurtzman-Counter. Guess he got married. bd - -----Original Message----- From: owner-chakram-refugees@smoe.org [mailto:owner-chakram-refugees@smoe.org]On Behalf Of cr Sent: Sunday, June 26, 2005 4:02 PM To: chakram-refugees@smoe.org Subject: Re: [chakram-refugees] OT - More On Liz Friedman On Sun, 26 Jun 2005 17:44, IfeRae@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 6/25/2005 7:52:56 AM Pacific Daylight Time, > > bookdaft@voyager.net writes: > > If you saw my post on Liz Friedman writing a script for Numb3rs, then you > > may like to see this additional information. (And don't say 'subtext', you all know that isn't what does it for me!) cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. My Xena DVDs are packed. Can someone open one up and check for the name of the man who hosts the "Bringing Monsters to Life" bits from the K.N.B. EFX Group for me please? I got to meet him today and I got an autograph, but now his name escapes me and that's just gonna drive me NUTS if I have to wait until I move to find out! lol Thanks! Course, he was only one of two effect guys there, but Bruce didn't introduce the other guy, so, I got his signature, but damned if I can READ it. LOL! They also worked on NARNIA! Sweet! And they are in Vancouver now shooting a movie (they did not say what). Bruce book signing review coming. Sorry, pictures will be in July. My wire to download the pictures from my camera is packed. Not that I have my convention pictures up yet or anything. Ha ha ha! BATTLE ON XENA! It was written and directed by Josh Becker and the music is by Joe LoDuca. Now god knows I know I'm no Josh Becker fan but this a pretty good movie. Briefly Campbell plays a thief who is just released from prison after serving five years. He was an exemplarily prisoner but is hardly reformed-he has planned a robbery for the very day he is released from prison with his high school friend and former partner in crime. The movie is suppose to run in real time but it's hard to believe so much can happen in an hour and a half but that's just a small grip. While this is a crime drama it is actually a interesting examination of people who have allowed adolescent dreams and dramas shape their lives. I was slightly disappointed by the film's end which seemed too romantic and upbeat for this film but putting that aside I would recommend the film if you get a chance to see it. Bruce Campbell and Anita Baron are excellent and Jeremy Roberts is terrific as Campbell's dimwitted friend with surprisingly lethal proclivities. Hey folks, first a note to all: Clearly Bruce Campbell is touring for his new book "Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way" (which I'm 30 pages into and already laughing my head off), so I advise you check out the big local book stores in your area and see if he's coming your way. He was just in Vancouver today, and I checked out the chapters.ca website, and for you Toronto area Xenites, he'll be in your town on July 26th. The movie is shot in black and white and as one continuous shot (well, there's no cuts - that you can SEE that is). Jeremy and Bruce both rock in this movie, and no, no, no, it's no Alien Apcolypse (darn - I should have asked Campbell what the hell was up with that today! lol) This movie is actually out on DVD. I found it for $8 CND on the cheap shelf one day. Score. Hey - I have to ask this. Why are Liz Friedman and Bruce Campbell posts being marked OT? It's totally Xena related - they worked on Xena! ;) BATTLE ON XENA!
