It shocks me that the show had such an impact on me at *my* age. I remember that you were young, but frankly, this cyber communication erased age barriers for me. Every now and then I'd see something that reminded me about someone's age, but otherwise it wasn't an issue. I think it's great to have such age diversity. The Gabs part was the main thing that struck me as way too coincidental. Hmmm, I'm just realizing how similar the premise is to When Fates Collide, except that this time Xena knows who Gabs is. But the idea that they were destined to meet is the same. Anyway, I'm not seeing how all that was so much more intolerable than what Xena may have faced before. It's her own need to do something about it that, once again, puts her in position to kill. > > I care for the next ep, Giant Killer, even less (it's on my TV right now and > > I'm finding more interest in my keyboard). Yeah, it's not one of my favs either. Interestingly, I felt the same way about "Succession." I hated the scenes where Xena stands there emoting in that isolation booth Ares stuck her in. "Be careful, Gabrielle." "What are you doing, Gabrielle?" "Hang in there, Gabrielle." "Good girl, Gabrielle." Argghhhhh! I tolerated it only because I know Lucy needed more off time because of the pregnancy. Farrar, Strauss & Giroux, $24.00, 255 p. (That's Songs on Bronze, not "of Bronze".) "Spivey, a professor of classics at Cambridge University, has effectively compressed the stories of the Greek gods and goddesses, Herakles, Jason and his Argonauts, the war against Troy, Odysseus' travels, and the tragedies og Oedipus and the house of Atreus, into contemporary language and storytelling style. From creation, through the ages of heroes, to the tragic final resolution of the gods' relations woth men, these stories unfold realistically and dramatically-- the world's first, most enduring novel." "In his preface, Spivey says that he set out to write these stories for his young children, "with due regard for their delicate sensibilities." However, he says, his children grew more quickly than he wrote, so he "accepted" the violence and sensuality of the myths-- and in doing so has conveyed something of the grasping, fearful world from which they came." "Spivey's style is direct, engaging, contemporary." The review gives two examples of Spivey's prose. First, when Jason sows the field of dragon's teeth-- "It was someone in the crowd who spotted the first sprout -- a shiny crested thing, soon recognizable as a helmet. Similar pointy objects began to proliferate all over the sown field. Then heads appeared - -- angry, bristling heads, twisting this way and that, as if impatient to begin a fight." When Persues has slain Medusa and realizes he has to hide her head so it will not turn more people to stone as he journeys on his flying horse - -- "Some weary local farmer, dozing under foliage, reported what could only have been a remarkable religious experience: An angel had dropped from the heavens and made for his satchel, in which a day's food was stored; had gesticulated wildly while tipping out the food; had stuffed into the satchel what appeared to be a woman's head, then flown away." This new popularization of the myths reminds me that one of the great strnegths of the Xena and Hercules series was the producers' knowledge of ancient history and lore. Renee O'Connmor was probably exaggerating when she said that the producers read 2 or 3 books for each episode, and many of the screenwriters probably knew little of the ancient world, but nevertheless something of the richness of the myths got into the two series. Compare the impoversihed imaginations behind the Sinbad and New Adventures of Robin Hood series. With any networking problem, problem definition is important. Can you get to Any sites? If not you have a connection problem. That's between you and your provider. If the machine started acting wierd right after you got broadband, you probably got hacked. NEVER run with an "always up" connection, like broadband, without an effective firewall (Zone Alarm is free and effective), it's akin to going into battle sans sword, you will shortly be toast in short order. Your broadband provider gave you several important IP addresses in the form XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX Your "gateway" and primary and secondary "DNS" servers. If you don't have them, GET THEM. As long as you have the gateway right, you can be using the DNS from 4 ISP's ago. When that ISP bites the dust, everything stops working BTDT.
