Now Aphrodite is in the middle of another modern drama. The Los Angeles Times, May 27, has an article "A Career in Roman Art Tangled in Italian Law" about Marion True, for several years the Roman-Greek-Etruscan art curator at the Getty Museum in L.A. The Getty has a huge classical art collection and ancient art is the most likely to be stolen, especially from Mediterranean countries where art is routinely stolen from excavations. Now Italy has indicted True for conspiracy to acquire stolen art. The indictment mentions a major piece-- a 7 1/2 foot tall statue of Aphrodite, which was valued at $20,000,000 when it cleared U.S. customs in 1987. (The article does not say where the statue was found or when it was made.) The article says that True has an excellent record, has always leaned over backwards to be ethical in the wild world of ancient art acquisition and returned to Italy some pieces which were acquired from questionable sources by her predecessor at the Getty. The Getty supports True and the article implies that the Italian Ministry of Antiquities is grandstanding. For some reason I can't open MaryD's site. Now I have had this problem off and on every since I got broadband. I have solved the problem numerous ways in the past by either just shutting down and restarting the computer numerous times, restoring the computer back to a previous time or by unplugging the modem and then plugging it back in. So far nothing right now is working. Why is this happening? Go ahead solve problem. - there must be a computer wiz out there. The episode was "Hunter's Moon." She voiced the character of Vixen. Based on the way the episode ended, she may be back as a love interest for Green Lantern and a rival of Hawkgirl. For those who are not aware of what JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED is, it is animated series based on the DC comic book characters in the Justice League. Granted I'm behind in reading my comics, but some of these I'm not sure currently exist in the book. But I do find it entertaining. JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED is currently aired on the Cartoon Network. Sorry, I've not found that it is repeated in the same week, but with luck this episode may repeat later on in the summer. bd ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
