It features shows gay viewers have taken to their hearts and of course Xena is one of them. It's a good program and both Renie and Liz Friedman are extensively featured. One of the more charming moments however is when Barbara Eden is asked if she liked Xena and of course she said yes - now I'm sure she did but I also think Barbara is such a good aunt that she wouldn't dare say otherwise. Wilson" Subject: Re: [chakram-refugees] Inside TV Land I saw it last night - it was a hoot, some good TV fun, and a great trip down memory lane. I had a ton of fun remembering all these shows, especially the early ones when as a child I knew 'something' was different about one of the characters (especially the ultra-flamboyant ones, like Paul Lynde, who was the gayest thing I'd ever seen on TV apart from Uncle Milty). They showcased everything and everyone, mostly shows from the 60s/70s (Sonny and Cher, Carol Burnett Show, Bewitched, Batman, Wonder Woman, I Dream of Jeannie, all of which as a child I watched and ate up), an era which was pretty darned flamboyantly gay. But the best fun was when they started talking about Wonder Woman and how "fierce" she was (I just love that word), then Liz began to talk about when she was working on Xena, how she was calling up the image and fierceness of Wonder Woman and amp'ing it up for the 90's. Instead of bright costume, girly lasso of truth, and wussy bullet-deflecting wrist bands, Xena got soft, sexy leather, a whip and an attitude. Rrowr. And lo, Xena was born. :) Renee was on two or three times throughout the segment, not only talking about Xena, but also talking about Willow and Tara. First about Xena she said early in the show, when Season II was on, they learned they had this immense gay and lesbian following and they began to embrace them as their leading audience. Xena's strength was so very appealing. Renee commented that Lucy's costume was all this wonderful, soft leather and huge huge breast... plate. :) Later, they showed the soap-sitting clip where Gabs responds "I was wondering what that was." Renee responded to the clip by laughing, saying that that was the joke - if it wasn't the soap, what should it have been and why was Gabby sitting on it, and why didn't she say something about it - did she normally sit on things in the hot tub with Xena? Heh. Then she was shown the clip from Buffy where, early in the Willow/Tara relationship, Willow goes over to Tara's dorm room and says she liked the spell they did the night before, but she didn't want Tara to think she was just into her for her spells, but she was wondering if they could do a spell that night, because she liked doing spells with her... It's one of the funniest, most tongue-in-cheek, most intentional, most obviously homoerotic conversations you'll ever see on TV. They showed Renee's reaction to it - huge laughs. It was really cool to see Renee. She looked gorgeous. :) But this was a fantastic show and more than anything it made me miss how very very cool and colorful and funny and exciting TV used to be. S. I've only had a chance to watch the first 15 minutes so far, but I can already tell it's a great documentary. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I've got TiVo on it. :) "Tickled Pink" actually had its TV Land debut last night, at 11 pm...it's very cool, Liz Friedman's on it a lot, and Renee, yay!! Barbara Eden also says lovely things about Xena...but then, her niece (Katherine Fugate) did write for the show, lol. ;) > > I also TiVo-ed _Double Dare_ the other night. Why didn'tcha watch the rest of it? :) It is indeed great...by the way, if anyone here's on livejournal (as Meredith and I are), someone has now started an lj community for fans of Zoe Bell, Lucy's Xena stunt double who is profiled in "Double Dare"! I feel like my mother! No wonder she never used that cell phone we got her. It's too much! But you younguns keep on making these references, so at least I'll have heard the terms, even if I don't know what the heck they mean. (BTW, I do have some acquaintance with TiVo. I've pretty much guessed what a livejournal is. I doubt I'll ever touch either with a 10-foot pole, but you never know. ) - -- Ife the Ancient "You are what you do.
