Finally reached the end of watching my Season 6 DVDs. All that's left is to watch the FIN commentary and the season extras. Anyway, Friend in Need (TV version) - It was nice to have Borias back, even if for just five minutes, with his sardonic comments ("I would have taken the gold" - advice to a dead Kao). I recall the first time I viewed the ep, I thought 'this is going to be a good one' and so (IMO) it proved. It's hard to disentangle ones feelings about the episode from the knowledge that it's the last ep ever - maybe it's easier now, with hindsight - but I reckon it's right up there with the best. The only respect in which the Debts or Sin Trades out-point it is, I think, scenery - so far as I can see FIN was filmed almost entirely at Lion Park. Part of the battle against the army in the forest was possibly elsewhere (possibly Muriwai/Woodhill Forest, possibly the little forest at Bethells). Interesting to note (and I'm talking about the TV version here) that Part 2 is the only Xena ep that didn't have the full XWP title sequence. I assume Rob felt that he'd had to cut enough out of the ep already and could use the time to advance the action. I noticed the skilful use of colour - the teahouse was all in subtle pastel shades, and the flashbacks with Akemi were in blues and greys. By contrast, the 'present-day' scene in burning Higuchi didn't succeed very well - first, because TV sets are usually horrible when it comes to showing red-lit scenes; and second, the whole thing about 'releasing the water from the tower' just didn't hang together very well. Doubtless my engineering nitpicking. The subtext was, I thought, so much more subtle and better done than in Fates. Not sure if subtle is the right word, it was explicit enough - let's say, much more justified and much better handled. I could even sympathise with Gabby wanting to dump the ashes in the fountain. Morimoto's Australian accent, though, still strikes me as incongruous and distracting in the extreme. I've finally figured out the logistics of the weaponry. The sacred katana (with the red handle) was won by Xena at the forge, she used it to behead Akemi, and it somehow ended up on the wooden stand in Yodoshi's teahouse. Xena must have retrieved it somehow, because she was wearing it during her final battle in the forest, and it rematerialised in the teahouse when she died. It was given to Gabs when she went to retrieve Xena's body, she defeated Morimoto with it, and took it to Mount Fuji where she gave it to Xena (after she revived Xena with the sacred spring water) and Xena finally killed Yodoshi with it. The other katana that was equally efficacious was Harukata's (the ghost-killer's). He used it in the fight in the teahouse against Yodoshi, it was the only katana in evidence in that fight, Harukata speared Yodoshi with it, it cut off Kenji's head, Yodoshi stabbed Harukata with it, Xena (IIRC) cut off Yodoshi's arm with it, and stabbed Yodoshi with it, at which Yodoshi disappeared through the teahouse roof like a rocket, but must have left the katana behind, because the next we saw of it was at the sacred spring on Mount Fuji where Akemi appeared with it attempting to kill Yodoshi. He swallowed her, grabbed the katana, and used it in the final fight against Xena. Full points to TPTB's continuity (for once) in not getting their katanas mixed up :) Talk of that final battle reminds me - the sight of those arrows zipping into the trees all round Xena still makes me cringe. Absolutely top-notch special effects there. Btw, I thought Akemi looked really cool holding a katana - something about the visual contrast between her innocent looks and the deadliness of the blade is striking. ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I musta had brainfade. Yodoshi took it with him, because he was using it to turn on the water in the spring. Xena came up behind him and sent him flying, he dropped the katana, and it was then that Akemi picked it up.... > because the next we > saw of it was at the sacred spring on Mount Fuji where Akemi appeared with > it attempting to kill Yodoshi. Apparently they're even legible. No, they are REALLY not. Oh, my eyes NEVER left Lucy. NOT ONCE. All the notes were written with my eyes never on the page, hence the challenge in reading them. Well, I finished writing it, so it will get typed up this weekend. We'll see how much else I get done. Gods, I am SO backed up. I have to start packing for my move in July, I have to finish up bitchofrome.com for the July 15th release date I've set, AND I've got a whole shelf of DVDs I just got that I need to watch in 30 days to make sure none are damanged should I need to replace them. She needs a little and asked me to forward this: Hi all, I'm looking for help in developing a new online Xena resource: a photo listing. I'm currently adding the Creation line of photos (using their naming convention) and I have a lot of holes to fill. Specifically, I'm looking for the black and white sheet inserts Creation sometimes include with their newsletters that show current Xena pictures and their codes. I'd love to receive physical copies of these sheets or just scans of them. Anything that will help me match photos to codes. I'm also looking for any Creation catalogs - except the 1988 Xena/Herc one. If anyone has photos with their codes printed on the back, I will probably also use that as a resource as well, but that will be the last ditch method. Although I'm currently trying to add Creation photos, I'd love any info about other 'official' Xena photos that anyone has, along with graphic examples. You'll get the idea after seeing the site: www.mastercat.ca This is going to be a site that will definitely benefit from lots of help from others. And I'll thank people who submit info on the site. And the site is still very much under construction. Thanks so much :) Stephanie Davis (Ashera - Striga) Ashera@asherasarchive.com Strigah@hotmail.com Thanks everyone! BATTLE ON XENA!
