So funny hearing Lucy comment on both Locusts and GPB without really knowing at the time just what she'd gotten herself into. Rather moving, hearing Renee talk about her experiences learning about soldier moms and interacting with women fans who'd been stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Also interesting to hear how different their acting preferences are, especially given their Xena characters. Lucy has often said she prefers comedy, while Renee says her passion is around real-life situations, presumably involving serious subjects. Both certainly seemed open to doing a XWP movie. Considering there were fans who'd just started watching the show (and that it's still refered to on current shows), maybe there's hope after all. Although Lucy does say in a different context that "hope" doesn't mean much without action behind it. Guess we'll see. - - Ife "You are what you do. I remember posting once about Gabs communicated a lot about what Xena was feeling or clues about what the viewer should "get." I really noticed how ROC reacted to Beowulf or Brunhilda, then might look at Xena. Sometimes she'd have a wry smile, sometimes anticipation of Xena's response, sometimes a little surprise. But always you could see her almost like a journalist picking up on everything, noodling it around, usually relating it to Xena's well-being. I also realized how much continuity Gabs represented, in terms of old themes that got revisited in S6. For example, Xena's past encounters with Odin & Co. could have easily seemed more "old hat." But Gab's comments about "my friend will never forgive herself" added more poignancy to the trilogy, connecting it to the burden Xena started out with and would always bear. The downside of Xena's commitment to her warrior way was that she lost some of the angst that initially drew me to the character. Sure, I knew it was still there, but I was reminded of it in Gabs' words to Brunhilda, her wordless sympathy for Xena, in her own recognition that no matter how much she or anybody else loved Xena, no matter how many good deeds Xena did, Xena would not let herself off the hook. Usually I'm focused on Xena. This time around, I was truly impressed by all the subtle little things ROC did as Gabrielle to add depth to the story and relationships. - -- Ife "You are what you do. If Xena always threw herself in at the drop of a hat, there wouldn't have been much of a series. She was always checking out all the angles, scoping out the players, determining which course of action might work best. Sometimes she did that instantaneously, sometimes after time to plan. You won't get any argument from me that Gabs (especially early on) wasn't cautious -- didn't think before she lept. But I always felt Xena knew what she was doing, understood the risks, even when she made split decisions and had no way of knowing the outcome. As to why she did what she did and when, we could argue for days about whether it was "characteristic." If she could've beaten anybody at any time she wanted, why did she ever bother waiting to attack, laying traps, sneaking in somebody's camp to spy and then leaving even though she could've taken them out then? To me, if she did it, it was because she had her reasons. I look for what those reasons might've been. I suppose I "stretch" them, like I think you did for Varia's motivation to kill Gabs in Helicon. If I start second-guessing the character (whether or not I agree with her choices) in her fantasy-world context, a lot of what Xena did wouldn't make sense to me. > It just struck me as very un-Xena-like to bail out so smartly. >> Heh, I know you mean "smartly" more like "quickly," but it aptly describes my own view -- "intelligently." Agreed, most of the motivations - and circumstances - were rather thin. Not least the 'set-up' that put Gabs in charge rather than Xena. In the DVD commentary (or interviews, one or the other) someone - Rob Tapert? Michael Hurst? - said they tried to 'protect' all the characters - I don't think they did a very good job. But anyway, first time round, I thought Varia's reason for killing Gabs - the Bellerophon deal - was one of the thinnest. Second time round, aided with knowledge of the Bellerophon 'deal', I 'noticed' the argument about abandoning the wounded for the first time, and realised it could certainly make Varia's decision a bit easier - if Gabs was proposing to sacrifice the wounded of Varia's tribe for the good of the others, it would add some justification in Varia's mind for sacrificing Gabs for the good of the whole tribe. So I quite agree, the argument over the wounded would not be enough reason for Varia to shoot Gabs - but it certainly could reduce any inhibitions Varia may have felt about taking up Bellerophon's offer. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I wasn't saying that Varia's motivation to kill Gabs was entirely due to Gabs' disregard of the wounded. What I was saying was that, on first viewing, Varia's attempt on Gabs' life came out of nowhere, and the alleged 'deal' with Bellerophon seemed rather 'thin' as a reason (because I'd forgotten the 'wounded' exchange). This is a case where foreknowledge helps - on re-watching the ep, and knowing what Varia's been promised, their verbal clash becomes more significant - Gabs' willingness to sacrifice the wounded for the good of the rest might certainly reduce any inhibitions Varia might have about sacrificing Gabs for the same reason. I'm not saying that adds up to 100% justification of Varia's actions, but it's certainly a lot less 'thin' than I thought first time round. > If I start > second-guessing the character (whether or not I agree with her choices) in > her fantasy-world context, a lot of what Xena did wouldn't make sense to > me. > > > It just struck me as very un-Xena-like to bail out so smartly. >> > > Heh, I know you mean "smartly" more like "quickly," I do, and in fact, it's such an established phrase in New Zealand English as to be quite unambiguous - the alternative meaning you describe below wouldn't even be considered. I was leaving my room Friday night to head to the theater for the very first Lucy performance of the weekend. I walked down the little corridor outside my door and turned left to get to the elevator area. Just as I turned the corner, I almost collided with someone who had been trying to turn into the corridor and was right in my face. And who almost instantaneously began to pat me on the front of my left shoulder and say happily, "It's so nice to see a friendly face. I love seeing these same friendly faces." The person was so close to me that I literally couldn't focus on their face-my eyes no longer work that close. I was startled but figuring "Hey, this must be someone who knows me", and being the nice person I am, I was perfectly willing to give them a smile. Suddenly they darted off and as they scuttled down the corridor I had just turned out of, I realized I had just given a friendly smile to Katherine Fugate. The next day when I went to the con events, Cheryl again started on me about Fugate. I pulled her aside and told her how Fugate had patted me and told me how glad she was to see my friendly face again. Which made Cheryl laugh so uproariously I was half afraid she was about to faint from glee. Within minutes Cheryl was proclaiming that Fugate and I were now best buddies. And continued to trumpet this endlessly all weekend. Now, luckily I did not share the second half of the story with Cheryl. Which was that Fugate had gone into the room right next door to mine. Yes, Katherine and I were sharing a wall. I say luckily because had Cheryl known this at the time, she probably would have "died laughing". Literally. After the con was over, I did tell Cheryl that Fugate and I were "this close". I had just felt uncomfortable outing one of the staff's room numbers while they were still in it. And man, no way did I want Fugate's room number to get around while I was living next door. I sure as heck had no desire to keep tripping over Fates fans in the hall as I went about my con business. They'd probably have been out there weeping and crying their softie little souls out, staking out some poor Xena dollie on a home-made mini crucifix, lighting candles in front of her to burn her teeny tootsies just to make her wail out for her soulmate to come save her, and spouting sappy dialogue from Fates right outside my door all night long. Oh you big fat smarty pants! Of COURSE this is acting. BUT what I was thinking, but obviously didn't bring into the mix, is that in most plays I've seen, actors tend to just sit around quietly somewhere out of the spotlight and do nothing or at least not much while another actor emotes. Well, not when they're actively in a scene with the other actor, but when one actor has a single "moment", it seems to me that the other actors try to fade back and truly hardly move or show any obvious reaction at all. Even in musicals--where each song is treated like a show-stopper. (To fool the audience into thinking it is.) But it's possible that since Lucy has had most of her work in filmed media, she's working as an actor would in that medium. Where anytime you're in a shot on set, you'd better be in character and be acting. Because if you're in the shot, you're part of the information the director is giving the audience. I mean, all those inserts that we get in filmed media are unique to that art form. From close-ups we get the impression that the other person is reacting to the main actor in each scene--even if the inserts are filmed in the real world after the first actor is all done acting. We also get things like shots of hands sticking something somewhere or shots of someone say reaching for a weapon or shots of someone making their way towards the scene we're watching. And when they get there, everyone on screen should suddenly look towards them when they arrive--again, even if the arriving actor is acting all alone on an empty sound stage and her/his part will be cut in later. I think a good film actor will keep in character even if they're in the background of the shot--so that when the inserts are flashed on screen, they are consistent with the long shot they're interspersed with. Also this moment is fixed forever and can be endlessly rewound and watched. So that the audience at their leisure can be looking anywhere--at any of the actors or any of the props or scenary. And it all better be "right" for what the director is trying to show. But in a play I don't think this is not only so critical but is almost out of place because it draws attention away from a one chance, "listen to this person talking now" moment. Now, having said this, I have to admit that when watching a play, I'm usually watching the main action/actor and not endlessly peeking at one of the other actors who is skulking in the corner. So hell, I could be all wrong. BUT. . . ain't that Lucy great! Speaking of Big Fat Smarty Pants, the next show the Men's Chorus is doing is "Captain Smarty Pants". md, I think you're in the running for the lead . . . > you crack me up. TCH!
