Anyway here is the scoop on shy KT. There have many momentous reconciliations in history - Nixon and Mao, Sad and Begin, Newt and Hillary - but this weekend was the biggest. KT and Katherine Fulgate are now best buddies. Yes you heard it here first. Katherine has even dubbed our KT a "friendly face" - imagine all those WFC lovers at the con and Katherine just knows that KT is her biggest fan of all. Well KT was agog and soon the two had adjoining rooms - ah soulmates meet once again at a Xena con. Also little did we know that KT is a shy little thing. Sometime you just have the drag the girl by her shirt tails just get her to stand next to a perfectly lovely New Zealand girl to get her picture took. Now as I am watching I notice that the character Denara is bathing in a pond with a very familiar waterfall - in fact it looks very much like where Xena and Gabby had many a skinny dip. And oddly enough the mountains look like Sin Trade mountains and Hercules sounds suspiciously like a Kiwi. So I skip ahead and sure enough the film was made in New Zealand. Now methinks this is odd. Rob Tapert made Hercules in NZ - Universal owns some part of Hercules - Hercules is a big hit - Universal now buys NBC - then makes a Hercules movie in New Zealand. Now I have the fishy feeling that Rob has been ripped off somehow. Especially since he can't seem to get Universal to cough up the money for a Xena picture but the studio has enough money to go to NZ to make a Hercules film. I suspect that next May we will be watching a film called Tina, Warrior Queen who has a chatty blond sidekick named Gertrude ( Gertty to her friends) also filmed in NZ. For those of you who don't know, XT and her fab website is going to be calling 'The Realm" home. (that's roach's realm, my little verse of it's own on the www). and on the video? Huhm, Maybe just maybe, if an arm gets twisted, we could match Silverwaves video with some other unique moments from the con and surrounding events that got captured by a few others who have made their successes known to me (and if you really twist, I'll share some of my own) I got some really good stuff. (I left my binoculars in the hotel.) There are lots of others who can report in detail about both, so I'll leave it to them and will just provide the things that affected me during my stay there. Nevertheless, I had a great time and met an old friend whom I think I turned into a new fan. When it was announced that Lucy was doing Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in Seattle, my first thought was to kill two birds with one stone and visit a friend who lives in the Seattle area, as well as see Lucy. I had helped my friend move there nearly 13 years ago and had not been back since. It seemed like a happy convergence of circumstances to visit her and attend the performance. My friend was interested in going because she had heard so many good things about the Seattle Men's Chorus, but had never seen them perform. Since this worked for her and for me, we made plans. I had also told my friend that I wanted to attend at least one day of the con in hopes of hearing about any Xena movie news. With luck, I would also be able to catch Renee's appearance at the con as well. I did not push my friend to go, but she decided she would like to give it a try. I think Saturday was one of the best single days at a Creation con that I have ever had. Katherine Fugate did not talk about When Fates Collide alone, but some of her past and how that impinged and affected her writing and career. Steve Sears took us through how a story meeting works and gave a flavor of what goes on behind the scenes in script-writing. And Renee's willingness to share the rough cut of her baby, Diamonds And Guns, was pretty special. She also brought along "One Weekend A Month." All of these things made the day pretty special for my friend. These are the things she tends to be interested in. She has had interests in science fiction and fantasy for far longer than I have. She has seen many more films of different genres than I will. She is a huge Jackie Chan fan: so much so that she went to Hong Kong with his fanclub for the Hong Kong premiere of the current film at the time. She knows as much about Hong Kong "chop socky" film, I would hazard, as Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi. So when we left Saturday evening after the convention, she was planning to meet me in Burbank next January for next year's Xena annual con. It doesn't hurt that she is a big Lost fan and that Creation just got the rights to run Lost conventions and its fanclub. As for the performance, it was a blast. The men's chorus were great and are so professional. My friend was tickled when she realized one of the local television personalities, John Curley, who played Robert Lemanteur, was part of the production. I've never seen a stage play done in concert, but this is one show I think doesn't need to be done with more than that. We got the jist of the story and it showed the chorus off nicely. I have newspaper copy of an interview of Lucy and Renee by a Seattle reporter which I may transcribe and post, if someone hasn't posted a link to the article. In that interview, Lucy comments on how talented the chorus is and that everyone ought to know just what a treasure the chorus and organization is. Faith Prince was a knockout, although at first I was afraid she might channel Carol Channing, but worry not, that never happened. Lorelei Lee was her own creation. Oh, and Lucy was pretty good, too. (Spectacular, actually.) On our way out, I heard a lot of this "Xena" this and "Xena" that. One fella overheard was that Lucy's autograph is more than Star Trek's William Shatner's and that Xena items up for auction (perhaps at a Creation convention) caused the Xena fans to go "nuts." Whether any of that is true or not, it made an impression on some people. No matter what, Xena is still very much alive in the public memory. My friend and I are planning a longer visit next January and, as I said, she plans on coming down to the con, too. We also might see the Seattle Men's Chorus again during that time, irrespective of whether Lucy performs again or not, since I plan on visiting in Seattle at that time as well. These guys are that good! My friend has told me she is going to try to watch all the Xena episodes by the con next year, which is pretty ambitious. She was more of a desultory fan of the show, so I think I unexpectedly converted her. Whether I had anything to do with it or not, I do believe that Katherine Fugate, Steve Sears, Renee and Creation were the biggest spark to that end. Well done. That's it for my non-report report. I think the character -- Reformed Xena -- always carried the element of conflictedness, which I loved. I meant that Lucy wore it like a glove. She could have Xena switch from "I don't want to kill, but I must" to "I probably should kill but I'm going to try not to" with a conviction that stood out for me in S6. I didn't feel as much of the old angst, so much as Xena's having come to terms with conflictedness as part of the job of trying to do the right thing. > > > Incidentally, what I said about Xena in 'Helicon' having lost some of her > fighting ability - when Bellerophon calls his men in his castle, all she can > > do is jump out of the window, instead of flattening them as classic Xena > would - is in stark contrast to Last of the Centaurs, where Xena does just > exactly that - flattens them - to Belach's men, never mind that they're > surrounding her pointing spears at her. If she got out alive, she could have a second chance a him. If she lost, the Amazons (and Gabs) were toast. She didn't "lose" her fighting ability. BTW, I just finished Old Ares. One of the best aspects of S6 is how much we get to see of Kevin Smith. His scenes with the dog and Neighbor Lady were priceless.
