She is absolutely adorable. For those of you who know her, picture Semra stretched out to about six feet tall. She has all the energy and pep of a 19-year-old, and you wouldn't guess she were much older, except she has three kids, and her show started ten years ago. When she showed up, she had the guys hypnotized. As with any guest first singing with us, we missed all our cues and notes; we were watching her instead of Dennis. The reactions she got for her little kicks and smiles and hair flips reminded me of the South Park episode, "Bebe's Boobs Destroy Society," except that she had mesmerized a room full of gay men. ________________________________________________________ And all the straight grrls on the lists know EXACTLY what he means. Laugh! This is just so typical--everytime Lucy steps out somewhere, the cast and crew get all starry-eyed over her. I always look forward to the DVD commentaries of her guest shots--they tend to have people saying things like, (Note: not exact quotes but as close as I can remember): "Lucy Lawless is the coolest human being any of us ever met" (Eurotrip) and "We decided to shoot the scene again. So we could bring Lucy back and spend more time with her." (X-Files) What a woman. KT ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Got as far as Path of Vengeance and Helicon in my viewing. A mention of You Are There first - glorous. Brilliant comedy, which also happened to advance the overall story arc, unlike most of the comedies. For which, considering the quality of most of them, I'm usually thankful. But YAT worked well on all levels. One thing I noticed in Path of Vengeance was that LoDuca was recycling good themes from older eps - specifically, towards the end of the ep after Varia relented and released Livia/Eve, the theme from the S4 'Vision' sequence; and as Eve, Xena and Gabs walked out of the council of queens' hut, the same brief musical phrase as at the end of Sin Trade when Cyane's undead Amazons were released from their mountainside. And then again, at the start of Helicon, as Varia was being made Queen, LoDuca used (very briefly) the same hypnotic drum beat (Dah da da dah da da DAH) as when Xena was in the cave doing her shaman thing at the start of Sin Trade. Talking of Varia, she really had a up-and-down career, didn't she? - as bad as Joxer's. In Coming Home, she was just Marga's warlike second-in-command, who recognised Eve as being Livia - her character was consistent in that ep. Then, in Dangerous Prey, she started out being really annoying, and Xena had to teach her some wisdom - OK so far. But then in Path of Vengeance she seemed to have forgotten all that - having the captive Romans executed - I really did not like that (much as I dislike all Romans, or at least XWP Romans, on principle....) Cyane had more wisdom. Okay, so Varia was being influenced by Ares. And then, after fighting Xena, she seemed to have learnt some wisdom and forgiveness and was on the way to becoming a respectable character. And at the start of Helicon this continued with her being made Queen. But then she gets captured by Bellerophon and forgets all she ever learnt and gets suckered by him into trying to shoot Gabs (not that I mind that, particularly , but as Xena said, suddenly becoming the voice of reason, what made Varia think Bellerophon would ever keep his word?). Thsi is Xena, remember, who killed Bellerophon's mum, who Bellerophoon _really_ wants to make suffer much worse than he hates Amazons, and his way of doing it is to kill Gabs - that at least is consistent with the subtext I guess - but then when Varia tries to do just that, Xena takes it all very calmly, as if Varia was just guilty of a mild breach of etiquette. Well, tht works for me, but I don't know what subtexters would make of it And then it's Gabs turn to go all out of character and she gets all ugly and vindictive with Varia - this is the Gabs who is always preaching forgiveness yadda yadda - and wants to leave Varia behind for Bellerophon. And when Xena talks her out of that, Gabs claims to strip Varia of her title as an Amazon queen. (I say 'claims to' because, IMO, she couldn't. She didn't have the authority. Varia was the queen of this tribe, elected by the council of queens - I think, legally, probably only the council of queens could decide if Varia had acted sufficiently unwisely to be demoted again. Gabs was acting war leader in Varia's absence - and now Varia was back, IMO Varia would automatically become leader again. Come to think of it, Varia's action probably wasn't even illegal - remember Queen Gabs' similar decision later to sacrifice one of the Amazons to the sharks? If war leader Queen Varia decided that the best interests of the Amazons lay in shooting Gabs, her judgement could be questioned but (probably) not her right to do it. Unless there was some Amazon law that said "No Amazon leader can sacrifice another Amazon" - but then, surely Gabs broke that one herself with the sharkbait? But leaving all legalities aside, I don't think this ep did Gabs' character, or Varia's, any favours at all. Or Xena's, come to think of it - she infiltrates Bellerophon's castle, he calls his guards and the only thing she can do is jump out the window? - heck, the Xena of old would have whacked the lot of them and rescued Varia in five minutes flat! (And I haven't even started on the plot holes yet.... :) Pity, the ep started well, the first five minutes were really promising.. :( cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
