"Locusts" swarms with laughs Let's understand soemthing up front. Locusts is one of the silliest movies you'll see all year. ... The second thing to understand is that it doesn't matter-- Lucy Lawless is in it and we'll watch Xena read the phone book. ... In attempting to portray an entomological disaster of biblical proportions, the movie comes across as absurd and unintentionally funny. Even if viewers contort to suspend disbelief and accept the "scientific" premise behind the action, the acting is lame, the dialogue stilited and the drama forced. Nonetheless, the movie is a hoot. Watch it for the humor instead of the horror. ... It doesn't help the movie's credibility that we see the toned and leggy Lawless parading around in her underwear and wearing skin-tight jeans and tops (see photo) that the USDA might consider "workplace inappropriate." ... Lawless is almost 5-foot-11 and I was most intimidated when I once stood next to her at a TV function when she was in 4-inch heels. ... To complicate matters, Maddy discovers she's pregnant. She actually holds up an early pregnancy test stick that says "pregnant," then consults the box instructions to determine exactly what that means. ... The film comes to us from the makers of Spring Break Shark Attack, so tune in, leave your brain at the door, and enjoy. Rest easy. No bugs were injured in the making of the film. Hey, a member of the PNW List just pointed out that either than Lucy, we can all be thrilled with the score of "Locusts" because, as in "Alien Apcolpse," our favourite compose Joseph LoDuca is the one doing the score! *cheers* Although, my fav movie score of his so far is "Boogeyman." What's so funny is that over-estimating height is so rarely done with women, but apparently not for women warriors. Heh. Now that Lucy's going after "mere mortal" roles, her height estimates may get lower and lower. I just watched Locust. I have to say I enjoyed it very much. I guess I'm just a sucker for bug movies. I thought Lucy was very good and very much in Lucy form. I liked a couple of nice bits she did: the astonished reaction to the pregnancy test and the spitting out of a giant locust in her father's barn (that had to be pure Lucy). I thought was some nice bits of sly humor. The scene in the movie's beginning where Maddy's husband is complaining about how much time she is spending on the job. I love the fact that Maddy plays it with the same condensating attitude that men have always played that scene. She practically pats the husband on the ass as she leaves for work, never taking his complaints seriously. Then I also liked the fact that the woman whom I assumed was a nervous secretary winds up being the science geek that figures out how to build the giant bug sapper. Anyway this isn't classic drama but it was enjoyable. I have to say it has been years since I watched on of the CBS Sunday movies. I not a big fan of sentimental love stories or people dying beautifully of awful diseases (unless of course the stories would involve people on horses with big swords). I think this was a nice change of pace for CBS. No this film had no tremendous significance and it wasn't high art either (the last film I saw that was touted as high art was Closer and that was dreadful) but it was fun. Granted the bar was set pretty low... but given a weak plot and predicable ending I still thought Lucy did a good job. A bit hard to tell since the characterizations were thin, but Lucy delivered her lines and her ability to use facial expression to read her emotions was typical Xena. Part I hated: her crying fit at the foot of the bed talking to her Dad Favorite part: In the car after the bugs were zapped.... Dan: "You did it". Lucy looks at hubby and replies, "No, we did it". Sound familiar??? Them Bones Them Bones ending...... Gabs to X & X back to Gabs.... same lines. Loved the music of course...
