Yes, it was very hard for me not to include one of those.  I admit to being 
more biased against "battle with the gods" eps, because I thought the "essence" 
had more to do with inner battles -- especially Xena's.  The character pretty 
much dissed gods and stressed self-reliance and determination.  That said, I 
was surprised I could leave "Fallen Angels" off, or "Looking Death," or "The 
Ring."  Certainly some fine acting and production in those.  I guess, for me, 
they just weren't original enough, compared to much that had preceded.  In 
fact, that's probably why I included as many earlier eps as I did -- because they 
were "firsts" and set up so many future story lines.

Well, there's certainly lots of room for differing opinions.  I really like 
some of the more standalone eps like "Been There," "It Takes One," and "Animal 
Attraction."  I thought they were very tight and well conceived, with 
wonderful homages to westerns, mysteries, etc.  I guess "Lyre" was my nod to that, in 
terms of demonstrating the show's versatility, comedic moments and ability to 
squeeze a lot out of self-contained stories.

Well, thank you!  That's saying a lot, considering our widely different views

Reflecting on that - musically (IMO), Bitter Suite was way better.   Xena's 
songs in the second half of BS were beautiful, I think.

Yeah, but if we're looking for 'typical' Xena eps, it seems to me Xena spent 
a lot of time doing battle with various gods, demons, or evil spirits.

Hmmm, I'd rather see 'best' than 'first'.    In that respect, 'first' does 
have the advantage of originality.   And since they tended to repeat 
successful eps, the 'first' often was the best - consider Sin Trade vs Them 
Bones,  Debts vs Purity/Back in the Bottle.   OTOH, the counter-example is 
the Callisto eps where (IMO)  Return of Callisto and A Necessary Evil were 
way more enjoyable than 'Callisto'.

I have the triptych from Creation of Xena, Gabrielle and Callisto called 
'Friend  or Foe' (#80 of 2500).  This is very awkward to pack so I'd like to send 
it to a loving home - for the price of postage.  It's not very heavy, so such 
postage shouldn't be too great in the USA.  However, it might be expensive in 
other countries, such as Alaska. :-)
