Anyway, there's no way I'd leave Debt off a "best of" list, which to me is not the same as a "favorites" list. For me, the former implies a combination of quality, innovation and capturing the essence of a show. Hence, Bitter Suite would be on my best list, even tho it ranks below others (especially comedies) that rank higher on my fav list but might not make the best list. Destiny is another ep I couldn't leave off my best list. Sorry, but I'd have to put Lyre on it as well according to my criteria. Hmmm, that's four (counting Debt as one). My others, not necessarily in rank order, would probably be Sin Trade (as one), AFIN (as one), Sins, Ides, Callisto, and Between the Lines. Mind you, it would be very hard to leave off ADITL, but mainly because of sentimental reasons. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Your first three points are very valid. Your fourth point, about execrable taste, while I entirely agree with it, is not something one can readily do anything about. Other than appoint KT Arbiter of Taste in which case we might as well let her choose the list and dispense with the rest of the charade. Hmmmm. I'd vote for that > Case in point: Prometheus got 11 votes. PROMETHEUS! ELEVEN VOTES! Ah, so there _is_ a vote breakdown somewhere. But anyway, re Prometheus - while I quite like the ep, for no very good reason, it's just sooo far off any conceiveable 'best of' list of mine. What I find puzzling is this (and I said the same about Lyre Lyre) - eleven people thought Prometheus was _better than any other episode_. Unfrickenbelievable! I mean that quite literally - I just find it hard to conceive how anyone could regard that as 'best' episode. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Ooooh, I can almost feel the flamethrowers being warmed up But I have to say, I personally agree with you. Fan contributions typically vary from genuinely good (a few) to 'good for an amateur' (which really means, about the standard of a rather poor ep) to embarrassing. While it might be fun to do, why would other people want to watch? No idea if this was really the case or not, but maybe adding that to dumping your cache and deleting your cookies would've done the trick. If my sorting of the ep's was correct, they skipped by the 15th ranked ep HEART OF DARKNESS and the 16th ranked ep IN SICKNESS AND IN HELL to include the 17th ranked ep MOTHERHOOD. Damn pity they couldn't have skipped down two more and added instead the 19th ranked ep THE DEBT. Yup, and the Ring trilogy would have scored nearly as much (between its three eps). Thanks for the list, btw - it does show some weird results. Lost Mariner (which is an ep most people seem to like fairly well) only got one vote, for example. Warrior...Princess, the first real comedy (and quite a good one IMO), only got three - no better than Giant Killer. Weird. Sacrifice 1 and 2 only got 19 votes between them - same as Sin Trade 1 and 2. And Crusader only got three votes - where were all the Najara fans? Howcome 'Callisto' got 128 votes, Return of Callisto just 21, and Intimate Stranger just 4? I'm a huge Callisto fan, and IMO Callisto (the character) just kept getting better episode by episode.... but you wouldn't guess that from the voting. I'm surprised at the showing for Chakram - 28 votes - even though it's an ep I like a lot, but I never thought it was highly regarded among the fans. On the whole, though, it shows the pattern I predicted - big votes for a few eps that do qualify (for one reason or another) as peoples' favourites, and a low but very erratic voting pattern for the rest. Anyway, thanks for listing the results. ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Or at least, there are no eps on your list that I'd strongly disagree with, and you haven't left out any that I'd say were absolutely essential for a 'Best of ' list. Eps I really like, that I wouldn't necessarily demand were on the 'best' list, are Motherhood and Sacrifice and the Ring trilogy. Actually, I could argue that Sacrifice (besides being great fun, which is why I like it) does capture the 'essence of the show' - Ares, Callisto, Xena's dark past coming back to haunt her, Ares' 'thing' for Xena, subtext, yadda yadda..... but I'm just splitting hairs about the list there Let's say your list is about 500% better than the 'official' list (IMO!) cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I was just making a jokie point about the Debt being not only a huge fan favorite but also the staff's favorite. For exactly the same reasons, I believe--great story, some great acting, the presence of Evil Inner Child Xena, great costumes, great sets, great lighting, etc. The creme de la creme of XWP. Rather than have a general vote, I'd rather have each staff writer pick their best (or best two maybe) and each director pick, maybe "best" isn't the right word, maybe say, the one(s) that came out closest to what they wanted, the ones that worked and showed on screen what they had in their mind's eye. Or the closest to that at least. But, we've seen in the commentaries, that many folks say essentially, "They're my children--I can't pick one favorite out. They all have some things I really like." But there's gotta be one that they're proudest of, say. > > > GASP! NOT buy a Xena set?! Hmmm. Actually, you know, it will depend for me > > upon what eps have commentary. Howcome? I know--that sucks. I was disappointed in many of the choices for commentary from 4, 5 and 6. There's many others I'd rather have heard them talk about than some of the ones they picked. But hey, they did pick some great ones to talk about also. Return of Callisto, Debt, Ides, FIN. Though I agree that would have been a cooler voting system, it still doesn't change the fact that this set offers NOTHING new. Frankly, just show me their list and that's fine. ;) >GASP! NOT buy a Xena set?! Hmmm. Actually, you know, it will depend for me >upon what eps >have commentary. The website does not mention anything about commentaries. The only 'bonus' features are the fan made stuff. Yeah, I'm spending $40 on that! *rolls eyes* Not that there couldn't be a few that would be fun or silly to watch (hey, anyone who's seen "The Bitter Treat" knows fans CAN make good stuff TOTALLY worth watching), but I'm not about to shell out money JUST for that (I WOULD, on the other hand, for "The Bitter Treat." LOVE that!) Hell, *I'M* working on a fan video too, so I can't judge. Ha ha ha. Ashera and I are still working on "Adventures in the Muppet Trade." Bwhahahahaha. BATTLE ON XENA! I took that list that Cousin Liz pointed out to us and broke it down by vote ranking. (I'm not that busy with work and it's a lazy Sunday, okay?) These are the top 17--well, 18 since there's a tie for 17th. I also unhandicapped the double/triple eps to see where they would be if they hadn't been split up. FIN, Debt and the Ring trilogy all made it. And all would have fit, since the season sets have 22 eps each, except for season one which had 24. So cutting it at 17 was apparently arbitrary. Sins of the Past actually ranked at 50th favorite. In this rigged poll anyway. Grin. Fates 333 One Against An Army 278 Bitter Suite 218 A Day In The Life 158 Amphipolis Under Seige 154 FIN 1&2 137 Callisto 128 Old Ares 119 Ides Of March 117 FIN 2 109 Lyre, Lyre 59 Been There, Done That 55 Is There A Doctor 53 Debts 1&2 50 Ring Trilogy 47 Many Happy Returns 42 Heart of Darkness 40 Fallen Angel 40 In Sickness In Health 37 Motherhood 33 Gurkan 33 So yeah, Heart of Darkness, Sickness and Gurkan were left out while Sins of the Past was put in. I noticed that Joxer is in eight of these eps. That's about half. At the con, there was a HUGE contingent of Joxer fans. That might explain the high rankings of Lyre, Lyre, Callisto, and Sickness, eps that I haven't seen on very many people's favorite lists.
