The figure had small wings and a circle in the center of her forehead. The program said that these elements showed Indian influence and that ancient Afghan art was influenced by both Greek Hellenistic art and Indian art. ...But it wasn't clear to me from the show how they identified the figure as an Aphrodite, instead of a depiction of some other goddess or woman." now i'm not an expert of greek or indian art, but a thought occurs from my studying of ancient mideastern and neareastern art styles, including figures of goddesses such as asherah and astarte (canaanite and hebrew), lilith and inanna (sumerian). that there are certain styles used to portray specific goddesses (may assume gods also). these are visual representations associated with the diety. epithets (descriptive terms) for asherah, for instance was "she who walked on the waves" and "the Lion Lady". "as such, she is often seen sometimes with a lions head, or as a lion with female head; or as in the Sinai, called Qadasha female standing on a lion." (this was a quote from a website i've gleaned for this info). so it's possible the small wings and circle on the forehead of the goddess figure is one known to have been used before with identified aphrodite images from other places. Boetian said, "Shortly after the Soviet archeologist dug up the treasure, the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979. At some point the Horde disappeared from an Afghan museum." although i may disagree with the taliban - traditional moslem (and also jewish, for that matter) religious beliefs prevent use of human figures in art, and of course, conservative forces might want to eliminate images of "alternative" religious points of view, including pagan - nonetheless, the absconding of afghan culture to soviet museums is something that really upsets me. in fact it is something that is done by many cultures, often european/u.s., and is being done now to non-"western" civilizations and has been done and is being done for the sake unfortunately, of money and power. an example, if you bear with me, is when bagdad fell to the u.s. forces a couple years ago, before that happened, there were private persons who arranged for the taking of several priceless artifacts from the bagdad museum for the purpose of being put on the market. these might go to private collectors/sellers, and often wind up in museums such as the louvre, british museums and u.s. museums.
