Bad Meredith! KT's gonna identify with one of those locusts -- probably the one that sits on Lucy's face the longest. "Whirrrrr whirrrr. Now, Lucy, there's some things I've been meanin' ta tell ya. I expect "Locusts!" to be nothing short of CRAP (like the TITLE doesn't warn you? And if that doesn't scare you, the plot line SHOULD!). Sadly, Lucy seems determined to pop up on as much crap as possible that under no SANE conditions would I watch (Eurotrip, Bernie Mac, Tarzan, a season of X-Files pass season five). WAH! Oh, I have a dream - a dream where Lucy gets to perform up to her skill with a REAL role. There's no chance in hell "Locusts!" will be that role. Expect crap, enjoy Lucy, that's it. BATTLE ON XENA! Last Wednesday my PBS station had a National Geographic special on efforts to recover Afghanistan's cultural treasures after the fall of the Taliban. The Taliban destroyed all representations of humans in art, including a giant statue of the Buddha. The special recounted the work of a Soviet archeologist who in 1978 found the "Bactrian Horde" in Afghanistan. This was a group of graves of men and women who were buried with many gold ornaments. They were about 2000 years old and were memebers of the royal family of Bactrian nomads who became rich either trading along the Silk Road or extorting money from the actual traders. They were able to bury a lot of gold with their princes and princesses. Shortly after the Soviet archeologist dug up the treasure, the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979. At some point the Horde disappeared from an Afghan museum. The Russian acheologist who found the Horde in the first place recently returned to Kabul to help find it. The searchers used a blowtorch to open several safes found in the Presidential palace (which was used by the Taliban, but not as their main center of power). The safes' keys were missing. Inside they found a lot of the Horde. I thought the docu was a little vague on whether the whole Horde was there or just some of it. They didn't mention anything about the Amrican government taking an interest in the search, but I assume the U.S. was interested in knowing whether a large horde of gold was still in the hands of the Taliban or Al-Qaida. The Bactrian Horde included a small figure of a woman that the program said was an Aphrodite. The figure had small wings and a circle in the center of her forehead. The program said that these elements showed Indian influence and that ancient Afghan art was influenced by both Greek Hellenistic art and Indian art. They said that a lot of male statues' heads made in Afghanistan resemble Greek statues of Apollo. So an Indian-influenced figure of Aphrodite was possible. But it wasn't clear to me from the show how they identified the figure as an Aphrodite, instead of a depiction of some other goddess or woman. The survival of the figure beats the odds in at least three ways. If the Taliban had recognized that it was a pagan goddess, they might have destroyed it for that reason. If they thought it was a figure of a woman they might have destroyed it because they wished to get rid of all art depicting humans. And of course it might have been melted down for its gold value by either the Taliban or ordinary looters. Instead it sat in the safe until it was recovered. The program also told the inspiring story of the staff of the Afghan Film Archive. The Taliban were determined to destroy all film. They demanded that the Film Archive turn over all their film for burning and threatened to execute anyone who hid film. The staff risked their lives by handing over prints but hiding the room in which they kept the nagatives. They simply walled up the door to the storeroom. Many Afghan art objects thatwere destroyed by the Taliban can now be seen only in film footage saved by the Archive staff. Interestingly enough the CIA types were only confused about the need for Hotpockets, they obviously understood the need for Xena.
