What was good: 1. Renee in her white her white space suit. Also her character kicked butt and never screamed, unfortunately her character was missing for most of the film. 2. Bruce Campbell was quite handsome and got to kiss Renee. 3. I liked the big bugs - they were the most interesting characters in the whole film. What was bad: Oh just about everything else. Now I know these kind of films are suppose to hearken back to the B films of the fifties with cheesy special effects and be campy in a fun way. However those old fifties films were at least competently made. This one certainly wasn't. Josh Becker spent an enormous amount of screen time on actors who couldn't act and wasted the talents of the two good actors he had. Renee had very little screen time and her character was boring. Bruce Campbell has lots of charm but it was no where to be seen. The script was also just plain awful. I know you aren't suppose to be too critical of plots in films like these but could any one really think the giant bugs in this film could take over earth. They are ridiculously easy to kill and their weapons are no more advanced than those possessed by a band of Michigan militiamen. Couldn't the writer or Becker think of one plausible reason why these bugs could have possibly defeated all the armies of the world. Maybe they sprayed acid from the hind legs, or their high pitched squeal turned humans to stone, or they allied themselves with native cockroaches who sabotaged our radar system - something that would make the bugs seem dangerous and the human's fear of them logical. Also I know Campbell's character is suppose to be cool but I think he could have been just a trifle more upset that his lady love was captured by the bugs. He knows she is going to lose at least a finger but there is hardly any reaction to her plight. I know one thing if Gabrielle had been captured by big giant bugs, Xena never would have gone on a leisurely hike through the woods looking for help - there would have been some major butt kicking and Gabby would have kept all her fingers. Finally what in the world was all this crap about Doctors of Osteopathy being less respected that Doctors of Medicine. I go to a D.O. who works for a major hospital in my area. Doctors of Osteopathy take all the same courses as medical doctors and pass the same licensing tests. It would appear that Becker confused them with chiropractors who do have issues with the medical establishment. Anyway I'm glad Renee got to make some money for Miles's college fund. It was nice to see her on screen again. CherylA ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
