I went over and looked at the site and it certainly looks genuine but you never can tell. One of the founders looks vaguely familiar as an actor I have seen. The charities also seem real. Perhaps Sharon could check this out. > Date: Fri, 25 Mar 2005 12:00:34 +0000 > From: "Cyane _" > Subject: [chakram-refugees] OT: Charity Auction Question > > Hi all, > > Has anyone ever heard of the 'Motion Picture Industry Charitable Alliance' > at http://mpica.org/? I then did a search for their tax records and downloaded their taxes for 2003. They only gave to two charities - George Hull Centre in Canada and the Stroke Association of Southern California. Apparently, each year they select a U.S. and a Canadian charity to support. Thus, the simple fact of being listed on the webpage does not mean that they will be receiving funds in a particular year. It looks from their 2003 tax forms that they took in $75,161, had $33,207 in expenses, and paid out $42,000 and thus, operated at a small net loss. The expenses seems high as a ratio to the amount given in charity but I'm sure their auction events are nice affairs. The individuals on the board do not get paid according to the tax form. My sense is that they do good work but it might be better to give directly to the charity of one's choice. I can send anyone the tax statement (pdf) if you write me back channel.
