The Butch Cassidy touch ('You sure you used enough dynamite there, Butch?') Xena always was a cool character. I'm not so sure about Gabs (but I'm sure the Gabfans will put me right on that :) But anyway, I thought those two at the end were more like the Xena and Gabs we 'know' than anywhere else in the ep. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I understand the concept, but I agree with Renee and Lucy that the delivery was god awful. There's numb and there's not acting. The delivery sounded like something a non-actor would deliver. Lucy and Renee didn't like being directed to act like that and I agree. I think they could have given a Lucy and Renee quality performance if just told to be 'numb' or 'a little shaken.' But the droning tone...no, that was no good. BATTLE ON XENA! That was one of the few bits of the ep I _did_ like! ?!? I'm with Lucy and Renee. That wasn't a performance. I'd have to put that scene in the WORST performance of the series for both of them. So glad to know they agree! BATTLE ON XENA! Driver and Sid Ray, published by McFarland, 2004. It is a collection of essays by academics on topics as far afield as Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Crouching Dragon Hidden Tiger and Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, all of which are said to reflect medieval views of heroism. There are six pages on Buffy and one paragraph on Xena. The Xena para. is in an essay by John M. Ganim, "The Hero in the Classroom." He writes-- My profesional conservatism was stronger when I began the course than when it ended, and I learned from my students that important conclusions could be drawn from what I had dismissed as slight material. Television programming was one good example. This was a generation that had grown up on Xena: Warrior Princess. They loved -- but knew to be a fabrication -- the conglomeration of prehistoric, classical and medieval characters, scenes, references and settings in the series. That is, in the same way that the structure of the computer game inculcated a suspension of moral belief, the television show inculcated a willing suspension of historical belief. While the series consciously alluded to (as did Roland Emmerich's Stargate, which in its film version distributed publicity about the scientific accuracy of its linguistic codes) New Age mystification of certain historical periods and the possibility of the permeability of time, my students have grown up recently enough to regard such beliefs as a trifle dated and comical. That is, although students felt themselves possessed of some arcane trivia as a result of these series (which spent a surprising amount of development time on historical research), they were sufficiently aware of the distinction between a postmodern pastiche of historical moments on the one hand and a philologically and archaeolgoically correct Middle Ages on the other. EVERY character will be CGI - it should be animated. Oye!
