Actually, I did think you had some scoring system (as opposed to instinct). I also thought overall quality (e.g., production, plot, acting, etc.) would count more (over, say, Xena's cozy), and that you wouldn't pick eps where you had to filter out a lot. Now that you've 'splained your thinking, I'm not so shocked you picked S5. Like I said, I have a hard time rating eps, let alone seasons, because of all the factors involved in my reactions. My "system" basically depends on which eps I most want to watch on a rainy day and which I want to watch over and over at any time. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I also thought overall quality (e.g., production, plot, acting, > etc.) would count more (over, say, Xena's cozy), Well, they do, though I missed mentioning them. I guess I focused on appearance because you mentioned the pregnancy. So far as production goes, I guess that's summed up by how good the episode 'looks', and I think S5 looked as good as any other season. > and that you wouldn't pick eps where you had to filter out a lot. Probably, I wouldn't. I can usually 'filter out' a couple of scenes I don't care for without it impacting too much on the episode (with certain exception like the prison scene in Gurkhan). OTOH, if an ep is full of many scenes I want to 'filter out' then it does drag the ep down in my estimation, not to mention the fact that there's likely to be less time left for scenes that I like. Obviously, the plot and the acting are important too. So far as acting goes, Lucy (who is by far the most important in that department for me) is occasionally brilliant, occasionally gets it 'wrong', but 95% of the time she's good. I won't pretend to detect the subtleties of her performance claimed by those Season 5 detractors who felt she was 'off' in that season - frankly, I think many of them were just seeing what they expected to see. What that means, though, for me, is that on a per-season basis (as opposed to a per-episode basis) there isn't a big variation in the quality of Lucy's performance. As to plots, generally in Xena eps, the plot only matters insofar as it gives chances for the characters to display their qualities. There is the occasional plot twist (like, when Gabs' peaceniks turned into Dahak-worshippers in Deliverer, or Xena organised Caesar's death in Ides), but generally one could say the plots are usually adequate but rarely dazzlingly brilliant or complex. They don't need to be. OTOH, the dialogue is often very good, in all seasons. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
