Really? You're okay with the pregnancy eps and lil Evie? I mean, I > know there are some eps you really like a lot (so you don't have to name > them), which I also think are quite strong. They're enough to put the > whole season over for you? > > -- Ife Well, yes. Though I have to admit, S3 and S6 would be close behind, or (on some days) ahead of it. (As far as I personally am concerned, of course. My impression is that, among fans in general, S3 and S6 would be more popular than S5). The pregnancy eps, I thought they handled okay. And, speaking as someone who hates children and detests babies (on screen), I thought they handled baby Eve remarkably well. Now I come to think of it, in most episodes, baby Eve was not a character so much as a plot object - TPTB could have substituted Gabrielle or even a pet pig and it would have worked the same way ("Sorry Xena, but your soulmate / pet has to die or it will bring about the death of the gods") Though I guess it's hard to imagine Xena getting so worked up over a pet pig. ;) The amount of "Ooh isn't she cute" was limited to a reasonable minimum, I guess. And thanks to the 25-year gap, we were spared Eve's childhood. And besides, if I can filter out the subtext, I can certainly filter out a baby ;) Which brings us to point two, the (alleged) lack of subtext in S5. Well, of course, I didn't notice, didn't care Point 3, I guess, is that, though Xena was pregnant some of the time, at least she knew what she was doing, she wasn't moping around in a daze getting beaten up by amateurs like Najara. And I was quite happy not to see Xena's leather armour, I never liked that armour, I think it looked campy and it made her look fat. I liked almost every other cossie (including that gorgeous blue maternity coat in 'Purity') much better than her armour. And the new fighting Gabby was a huge improvement on the judgemental Way of Peace-nik of Season 4. The other factor in my judgement is that usually (that is, except when I decide to do it differently :) I rate a season by a sort of subconscious summing-up of the number of 'watchable' episodes in it. That is, episodes I personally enjoy watching - not just the ones I rate 'best'. If I rated seasons on 'best' eps then probably S3 or S6 would win. (Sin Trade / Endgame / Ides would still not be enough to save S4). But in S5 there are a lot of middlin' eps which are (IMO!!) quite as good or a bit better than the middlin' eps of other seasons, and therefore, for me, 'watchable'. Eps I like are - Fallen Angel (not that I'm crazy about it, but it's certainly watchable and parts are first-rate), Chakram (which I love - and btw, Eli is at his least annoying in that ep :), Them Bones, Purity, Back in the Bottle, Little Problems (and please note, the kid is _not_ 'cute', they played it straight thereby making her a far more attractive character), God Fearing Child, Eternal Bonds, Amphipolis Under Siege, Lifeblood (hey, I *liked* Lifeblood, mostly I have to admit for the fascinating glimpses of Amazon High), Anthony & Cleopatra, Looking Death in the Eye, Livia, Eve (those two were, well, passable), and Motherhood. Eps I don't care for or dislike, I just ignore (in much the same way as I manage to ignore, say, the more subtexty moments in episodes like Ides - I don't let it spoil the ep for me. And, even easier than ignoring unwanted scenes in an ep, is ignoring disliked episodes (such as that horror Fishsticks) when summing up a season. So one truly awful ep (like Fishsticks) doesn't drag a season down in my 'ratings' nearly as much as a string of not-too-bad-but-don't-score-any-points episodes such as in Season 1. Not that I've ever sat down and worked out scores on paper like that, I'm just trying to analyse why I instinctively rate S5 as (one of) my favourites. Doubtless other people have their own 'system', explicit or otherwise. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. One thing I totally forgot to mention in my recent Burbank convention report (on my livejournal), is that Ted Raimi mentioned he had just filmed an episode of "CSI: New York" that week (yes, it films in LA, same as CSI: Miami, lol)...when I asked him, he said it should air in a few weeks, so I am keeping my eyes peeled. He plays a villain, a guy who sells bondage equipment, heh heh :) and is accused of tying up a girl and killing her. There's a bit of info about it on Ted's site now, www.tedraimi.com. - -Sarah, aka the abbagirl- ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
